Patrick Mahomes wins Super Bowl MVP
Mahomes has bucked the trend. The past nine NFL MVP winners who have appeared in the big game have lost after earning the top individual award for the season. The last MVP to win the Super Bowl was Kurt Warner with the then-St. Louis Rams back in January of 2000.
Playing through a high-ankle sprain, Mahomes completed 21-of-27 passes for 182 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also added 44 rushing yards on six attempts to come away with the hardware.
Controversial penalty leads to Chiefs game-winning field goal
Tied at 35 late in the fourth quarter, Kansas City was facing third-and-8 from the Eagles 15-yard line. That’s when Eagles cornerback James Bradberry was called for defensive holding to set up a first down. A few plays later, and Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker nailed a chip-shot field goal to give Kansas City a 38-35 lead and the eventual win.
This will be talked about for some time.
Eagles come storming back, tie the game up behind Jalen Hurts
This back-and-forth affair continued on the Eagles’ next offensive possession with Hurts leading them down the field on a 75-yard touchdown-scoring drive, culminating in a two-yard touchdown run from the quarterback.
He broke the single-game Super Bowl record for rushing touchdowns for a quarterback. The MVP finalist then converted on a two-point conversion to tie the game up at 35 with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Absolute insanity.
Chiefs force three-and-out, continue with momentum on punt return
Shortly after taking a one-point lead, Kansas City’s defense forced its first three-and-out and just the Eagles second punt of the game. In the process, Kadarius Toney returned the punt 65 yards inside the Eagles 10-yard line to give Kansas City even more momentum.
Just a few plays later, and Mahomes hit rookie Skyy Moore for a touchdown on third down to give Kansas City a shocking eight-point lead.
What is even happening here?
Somehow, the Kansas City Chiefs lead
In a game that has been dominated by Philadelphia from both a field of possession and yardage standpoint, Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City took the lead early in the fourth quarter. It came via a five-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to New York Giants cast-off Kadarius Toney to give Kansas City a 28-27 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the final stanza.
Mahomes marches Chiefs down the field after halftime
So much for Mahomes’ ankle injury. With the Chiefs getting the ball after halftime, not only did Mahomes come running out onto the field, he quickly marched the offense down the field, erasing all doubts about his ankle, scrambling for a 14-yard run to set up first-and-goal.
In all, Mahomes led a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, capped off with a one-yard Isiah Pacheco touchdown run.
Eagles score a field goal to take a two-score lead
Philadelphia finds itself up 24-14 after the first 30 minutes. The team drove down the field 40 yards on eight plays for a field goal from Jake Elliott and a 24-14 lead. Hurts finished the first half completing 17-of-22 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown while adding 63 yards and two scores on the ground.
Philadelphia Eagles force punt, Patrick Mahomes injured
After taking a 21-14 lead, Philadelphia’s defense held the Chiefs late in the second quarter. However, it’s the injury that Patrick Mahomes suffered on a scramble that has people talking. It seems as if the NFL MVP aggravated his high-ankle sprain. He was seen in a tremendous amount of pain on the sidelined after making his way off the field with an obvious limp.
Jalen Hurts scores third touchdown as Eagles take first-half lead
The NFL MVP finalist used his legs to get Philadelphia out on top late in the second quarter on a 12-play, 75-yard drive. That included converting on two fourth downs throughout the drive. The end result was Hurts scoring his third touchdown of the half via a four-yard run.
Jalen Hurts picks up first on fourth down
Hurts responded after his lost fumble resulted in a touchdown for the Chiefs. It came on Philadelphia’s next possession. Facing a fourth-and-five from Kansas City’s 44-yard line, Hurts scrambled up the middle to the Chiefs’ 16 for 28 yards to continue the momentum. By virtue of this run, Hurts had tallied 57 yards on nine attempts in the first half alone.
Shocking turn of events as Kansas City Chiefs score on defense
The Philadelphia Eagles were facing a third-and-five from their own 49-yard line after a false start on guard Isaac Seumalo when Kansas City’s defense made a game-changing play. Hurts simply lost the ball on a designed run.
It was picked up by stud linebacker Nick Bolton and returned the other way for a touchdown to tie the game up at 14. It sure seemed like Philadelphia was driving for a two-score lead. Within the matter of just a few seconds, the game was tied. Simply insane stuff.
Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown connect on 45-yard touchdown
Eagles Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown has had a quiet postseason thus far. That’s until he came to play big time to open the second quarter with Hurts hitting Brown on a 45-yard touchdown with Brown making one heck of a play against a young Chiefs secondary, including rookie first-round pick Trent McDuffie. This huge play gave Philadelphia a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Eagles have no answer for Travis Kelce
Multiple coverage busts have left Travis Kelce wide-open on the first two drives. He’s turned three catches into 60 receiving yards, well on his way to crushing the over (72.5 yards) for the entire game. Fortunately for the Eagles, Harrison Butker missed a 42-yard field goal, doinking it off the post, so we’re still tied.
Zach Pascal injury dooms Eagles’ drive
What could’ve been an important drive for Philadelphia essentially failed before it began. Zach Pascal was called for offensive pass interference, blocking the defensive back past the line of scrimmage before Kenneth Gainwell caught the screen pass. It forced a 1st-and-20, which the Eagles couldn’t dig out of.
Kansas City strikes back
Following an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive by the Eagles to take a 7-0 lead, the Chiefs’ offense immediately responded. Isiah Pacheco burst for a 24-yard run, but Travis Kelce led the way on this drive with a 20-yard reception followed by a game-tying 18-yard touchdown.
Jalen Hurts, Eagles’ offense in peak form
One of the best offenses in the NFL didn’t show a hint of rust on its first drive of the Super Bowl after two weeks off. Jalen Hurts completed 4-of-5 passes for 54 yards, taking on an 11-yard rush, moving Philadelphia into the red zone.
On first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Hurts punched it in for the first touchdown of the Super Bowl.
Chiefs win the coin toss
The Kansas City Chiefs won the coin toss, with the coin coming up tails. With Kansas City receiving the football to start the second half, the Eagles offense starts the Super Bowl with the football.
Philadelphia loses TV connection
The worst-case scenario seems to be happening. Moments before the Super Bowl, football fans in Philadelphia lost their connection to the game. Comcast reported a massive outage in the region, an issue that has only gotten worse closer to kickoff. Eagles fans are just hoping this isn’t a bad omen.

Both Mahomes and Hurts are officially inside the building and delivering some quality but not flashy fashion. In just a few hours, they’ll be suited up and competing for the Lombardi Trophy.
Chiefs vs Eagles preview
The Chiefs and Eagles were the two best NFL teams in the regular season. After earning the No. 1 seed in the AFC and NFC, Philadelphia and Kansas City took advantage of home-field advantage and the first-round bye to make it here.
We also must account for health when looking at these two teams. The Chiefs didn’t list a single player on their final injury report before the Super Bowl and Philadelphia will take the field with all of its starters active and ready to play.

On one side of the ball, we have future Hall of Famers with Reid, Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Kansas City’s offense was one of the best in the NFL during the regular season, even without Tyreek Hill. Quite frankly, this is one of the most evenly-matched Super Bowls we can recall in years. It’s truly a coinflip when picking between these two teams, with the choice coming down to betting on the best quarterback or the better defense and offensive line to win. This will be a fantastic game.

Both quarterbacks are coming into this game with injuries. Hurts suffered an SC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder during a Week 15 contest against the Chicago Bears. While he returned to action in Week 18, the injury is still impacting him and playing a role in his diminished passing and rushing production during the playoffs.
Mahomes suffered a high-ankle sprain in the Divisional Round victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. While the two-time NFL MVL practiced without limitations before the Super Bowl, a high-ankle sprain is typically a 4-6 week injury. As a result, his mobility will likely be impacted.
Even with the physical limitations influencing both quarterbacks, we still expect them to perform at a high level in the Super Bowl. This should be a high-scoring game, with both NFL stars making a handful of plays that will live on Super Bowl 2023 highlights.
