Notre Dame is generally recognized for being an iconic college football program that struggles to thrive on the biggest of stages in recent years, and a recent Twitter survey reflects a national consensus that the Fighting Irish are overrated.

A Twitter poll using data from BetOnline.ag found that 23 states arrived at the conclusion that Notre Dame was college football’s most overrated team, as can be gleaned from the map below:

Here’s the full breakdown of how many states hold particular college football teams in low esteem. Over 230,000 tweets were compiled to come up with these stats, so it was not at all a small sample size:

North Carolina clear-cut No.2 behind Notre Dame on most overrated CFB list

Somewhat surprising is the heat put on the North Carolina Tar Heels. They lost most of their major offensive skill players from last year to the NFL. Quarterback Sam Howell is considered a top draft prospect, but an ugly 17-10 loss to Virginia Tech to open North Carolina’s season obviously contributed to their low status here.

You can see some obvious instances of in-state bias when it comes to places like Oklahoma throwing shade at their biggest rival, Texas, or with Alabama implying that LSU is the most overrated team in college football.

That’s why the widespread belief in the Irish’s failure to meet the hype stands out so much.

Notre Dame’s sluggish start in Week 1 had to play a factor

It’s true that Notre Dame was a huge favorite in its 2021 season opener versus Florida State, yet barely squeaked by with 41-38 overtime victory. The Seminoles scored 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to force the extra time, so the Irish were fortunate to escape with a win.

Coming out flat like that is no help to the perception of Notre Dame’s program. Still, the Irish are ranked eighth in the latest AP poll, and have a crack to qualify for the College Football Playoff for the third time in four years.

For all the criticism Notre Dame receives, head coach Brian Kelly has actually had quite a successful tenure. It’s just difficult to stack up with the incredible standard Alabama has set under Nick Saban.
