The New York Giants were hoping that the return of Saquon Barkley would give them a boost heading into their season opener against the Denver Broncos.

Instead, the Giants put forth a performance that their fans have grown accustomed to seeing over the last few seasons, as they were dominated by the Broncos 27-13.

Daniel Jones scored on a four-yard run on the final play of the game to make the game appear closer than what it actually was, as the Broncos were in full command by the fourth quarter.

Jones finished the game completing 22-of-37 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown.

Denver’s quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was more efficient, completing 28-of-36 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns.

In his return, Barkley carried the ball 10 times for only 26 yards and had a reception for one yard. As a team, the New York Giants New gained just 60 yards on the ground on 20 carries, as the Broncos front seven overwhelmed the offensive line.

Despite their struggles on offense, the Giants did have a chance to get back into the game in the third quarter. With the Giants trailing 17-7 late in the third quarter, Jones ran up the middle to the Denver 15-yard line but was stripped by linebacker Josey Jewell and the ball was recovered by Malik Reed.

Perhapsm what was most disappointing for Big Blue on Sunday was that their defense couldn’t come through when it mattered most. They allowed the Broncos to convert all three of their fourth-down attempts, and they allowed Denver to gain 165 yards on the ground on 28 carries, including Melvin Gordon’s 70-yard touchdown run in the final stanza.

The only bright spot for Big Blue on Sunday was Sterling Shepard who caught seven passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Head coach Joe Judge will have to get his team ready to rebound quickly as they play Washington on Thursday night at FedEx Field. There’s reason to be optimistic about the New York Giants’ chances on Thursday as Daniel Jones is 4-0 against Washington.
