Miami Dolphins training camp storylines
Vic Fangio’s influence on the defense
Miami needed to make a change at defensive coordinator. Last season, the Dolphins finished 13th in Football Outsiders’ Weighted DVOA, ranked 24th in red-zone touchdown rate allowed (60.32 percent) and 26th in third-down conversion rate (42.57 percent). Vic Fangio is one of the best NFL defensive coordinators of his era and he can breathe new life into this defense.

Fans will get an early glimpse of Fangio’s defense in training camp. With nearly four decades of coaching experience, Fangio is both innovative and knows how to teach what works. He’s going to bring more diverse schemes to Miami’s defense and he’ll utilize the blitz far more effectively. Plus, his history with pass rushers suggests breakout seasons for young players could be on the horizon.
Finding the next Dolphins’ breakout player
Speaking of young players, training camp is their time to make a strong first impression. Jaylen Waddle stole the show last season, now he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL. This year, we’re keeping a close eye on Durham Smythe, Channing Tindall, Devon Achane and Jaelan Phillips. It’ll likely be Phillips who delivers the two breakout year, potentially becoming one of the best, young pass rushers in the AFC.

Monitoring Miami’s offensive line
Tua Tagovailoa’s concussions are a far bigger storyline for the regular season, our focus will be on Miami’s offensive line during training camp. The Dolphins finished the regular season ranked 17th in PFF’s Pass Blocking Efficiency, surrendering 128 hurries and 34 hits on the year. Miami’s depth on the offensive line has improved and the coaching staff can feel confident in the starters at left tackle, center and right guard. However, fans will want to keep a close eye on left guard and right tackle, with Austin Jackson and Isaiah Wynn battling it out on the right side.
