Can LIV Golfers play in the PGA Championship
Yes, players from LIV Golf can play in the PGA Championship.
Why are players from LIV Golf competing in the PGA Championship
The PGA of America set the qualification process and the exemptions into the 2024 PGA championship, which includes some of the LIV players, whether it is through their performance in recent history at a PGA Championship or another major tournament.
Some of the LIV Golf players competing in the second major of 2024 are past major champions and get the nod into the event. Although players from LIV Golf do not accrue Official World Golf Ranking points, there are some who earned an invite by being inside the top 100, including Patrick Reed, whose top-12 finish at the Masters last month put inside the top 100 of the OWGR at No. 92 to keep his streak of playing every major alive since the 2014 Masters Tournament.
The highest-ranked player from LIV Golf playing the PGA Championshp is Jon Rahm, who sits at No. 5. Rahm is looking for his best finish at this event since his T8 in 2021 and his T4 in 2018. Last year, Rahm finished T50 one month after his Masters win and in 2022 he tied for 48th.
There are other players who received an exemption, specifically through the approval of the PGA of America tournament committee to allow an invite, like Joaquin Niemann and Talor Gooch.
LIV Golfers in the PGA Championship
There are 16 players from the LIV Golf circuit that will be competing at the PGA Championship at Valhalla, led by Koepka, the three-time PGA Championship winner. The 16 players from LIV Golf is two players short of last year’s 18.
One of those players who competed in last year’s PGA Championship but not this year’s is Louis Oosthuizen, who was the 2010 Open Champion and has finished as a runner-up in all four majors, including the 2012 Masters, the 2015 and 2021 U.S. Open, 2015 Open Championship and the 2017 and 2021 PGA Championship. This comes after Oosthuizen missed the Masters and now has ensured himself into one major this year, the Open Championship in July.
