Josh McDaniels under pressure heading into 2023 season

There were rumors floating about in Sin City that McDaniels could’ve been one-and-done with the Raiders. The regression we saw from this team in 2023 in comparison to the end of the previous year was telling. Perhaps, the embattled McDaniels was in over his head.

Staying true to form, Raiders owner Mark Davis showed loyalty to McDaniels. He didn’t panic after one season. The question now is whether the former Denver Broncos head coach can turn things around as a sophomore in Vegas. Including last season’s 6-11 record, McDaniels is 17-28 as an NFL head coach. Another down season could very well spell an end to his time in Nevada. It starts at Raiders training camp.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s status after surgery

It was surprising to learn months after Jimmy Garoppolo signed with the Raiders that he had undergone yet another foot surgery. Vegas’ brass broke the news back in late-May in stunning fashion.

“He’s going through his process just like we knew he would,” Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels on Jimmy Garoppolo’s surgery. “Nothing has happened that would surprise us based on the information we had.”

A week later, and McDaniels sounded a bit more optimistic that Garoppolo will be able to get reps during Raiders training camp.

To say that Vegas is relying a great deal on Garoppolo remaining healthy would be an understatement. Brian Hoyer is the only other quarterback on the Raiders’ roster with NFL experience.

Josh Jacobs as a potential holdout

At this point, it is expected that the reigning NFL rushing champion will be a hold in from training camp. Vegas placed the $10.09 million franchise tag on the running back. He has yet to sign it and is looking for a long-term contract. For good reason. The dude was absolutely brilliant a season ago.

With a new quarterback under center, it’s vital that Jacobs gets reps during training camp. If that means the Raiders bite the proverbial bullet and provide the running back with a rare contract extension, so be it.
