NBA Commissioner: Further information uncovered on Ja Morant, suspension decision made

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant has been under investigation by the NBA after a second incident surfaced on social media in which the All-Star wielded a firearm in public back in mid May.

After that incident became public record, the Grizzlies suspended Morant indefinitely. Meanwhile, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed his shock over the incident.

Giving a press conference ahead of Game 1 of the 2023 NBA Finals Thursday evening, Silver broke some major news on this front. The commissioner indicated that a decision has been made regarding Morant’s suspension. However, an announcement will be made after the Finals are concluded. He also had a rather interesting development on the NBA’s investigation into the matter.

“We’ve uncovered a fair amount of additional information. We probably could have brought it to a head now, but we’ve made the decision that it would be unfair to these players and these teams to announce that decision in the middle of this series,” Adam Silver on Ja Morant investigation.

Obviously, this does not sound like good news for the 23-year-old Morant. It sure does seem like that the additional information the NBA came across in its investigation is going to lead to a lengthy ban from the Association for Morant.

Prior to May’s incident going viral, Morant was involved in another incident while his Grizzlies were on a road trip taking on the Denver Nuggets. The former NBA Rookie of the Year was shown on social media flashing a firearm inside a night club in Colorado. At that point, Morant received an eight-game suspension.

Prior to his most-recent comments, Silver displayed frustration over the second incident which led to Morant’s indefinite ban from the Grizzlies.

“Honestly, I was shocked when I saw this weekend — that video. Now, we’re in the process of investigating it,” Silver said back on May 16.

One of the best young players in the game, Ja Morant is averaging 22.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.4 assists throughout his four-year career. It was just back in July of 2022 that he signed a five-year, $194.3 million contract extension with the Grizzlies.

Sportsnaut will have further updates on this developing story once they become available. For now, it’s not good.
