Green Bay Packers guarantee Jordan Love over $13 million in contract extension

If you didn’t think the Green Bay Packers were fully invested in Jordan Love after trading team icon Aaron Rodgers, they solidified that fact by giving the young quarterback a raise in a contract extension on Tuesday.

The Green Bay Packers have been one of the biggest stories this offseason as they made the bold decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers only a couple of years removed from back-to-back MVP seasons. Last week, they finalized that stance when they traded the future Hall-of-Famer to the New York Jets for draft assets in 2023 and 2024.

Now, the keys to the Green Bay Packers offense are officially Jordan Love’s. Yet, his future on the team wasn’t so clear beyond with option years on the horizon. The franchise did have the choice of letting him play out the last two years of his deal and then pick up his fifth-year option which would have been fully guaranteed at $20.2 million. However, on Tuesday the organization went in a different direction.

Green Bay Packers record (2022): 8-9, third place in NFC North

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was one of the first to report that the “Packers and Jordan Love have agreed on a one-year contract extension worth up to $22.5 million, including $13.5 million fully guaranteed.”

The deal now keeps him on the team for the next to seasons, and then there is the opportunity for the Green Bay Packers to use their franchise tag on him in 2025 and 2026 if they so choose. It also takes them away from bigger guarantees down the road while giving Love a slight rise over what he could have potentially made on his rookie contract.

Now, the 26th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft will get the chance to prove he is the Green Bay Packers QB of the future and earn himself a massive payday a few years down the line.

Jordan Love has played in 10 games after serving as a backup over the first two seasons of his career.
