Deshaun Watson is among the most-talented quarterbacks in the NFL. From an on-field standpoint, he’s proven to be a generational signal caller.

Despite this, a trade request coupled with some legal issues has Watson riding it out as the fourth-string quarterback on the Houston Texans’ initial depth chart for the 2021 season.

Even with the context mentioned above, this still has to be seen as shocking given where Watson’s career trajectory was this time last year.

You read that right. Here’s the Texans’ depth chart ahead of their preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers.

  1. Tyrod Taylor
  2. Jeff Driskel
  3. Davis Mills
  4. Deshaun Watson

All things equal, those three quarterbacks ahead of Watson couldn’t even hold his jockstrap.

Even then, there’s numerous reasons for this.

First off, Watson won’t be joining his Texans teammates for their road trip to Wisconsin to take on the Packers. He’s been extremely limited when it comes to involvement during training camp and was even away from the team for a bit recently.

Watson opted to report to training camp to avoid the $50,000 daily fine that would have come his way if he held out.

Secondly, north of 20 women have come forward accusing Deshaun Watson of sexual assault and/or sexual misconduct. With the Houston Police Department conducting a criminal investigation into the matter, it remains to be seen if Watson will even see the field this coming season.

That doesn’t even take into account an NFL-led investigation into the allegations and the possibility that Watson could be suspended.

It’s still rather jarring to see Watson as the Texan’s fourth-string quarterback.
