Just when you thought the (4-12) New York Giants‘ 2021 season couldn’t get any worse, they hit rock bottom on Sunday as they were demolished by the (6-10) Chicago Bears 29-3.
Everyone expected the Giants offense would struggle, but even the most pessimistic person couldn’t imagine how putrid the Giants offense would be on Sunday.
On the first offensive play of the game, Mike Glennon was stripped sacked by Trevis Gipson, and the ball was recovered by Bilal Nichols who ran it back to the Giants’ two-yard line.
On the next play running back David Montgomery scored to put Chicago up 7-0.
New York would commit their second turnover of the game on the fifth play of their next drive as Glennon was intercepted by Tashaun Gipson. Seven plays later Chicago would cash in on their second touchdown as Andy Dalton connected with Darnell Mooney on a four-yard touchdown reception to go up 14-0 with 8:08 remaining in the first quarter.
Mooney’s touchdown ended any possibility that New York could be competitive in this game. With how horrendous Big Blue’s offense has been over the past month, there was no reason to believe the Giants could score enough points to threaten Chicago’s lead.
But no one could have fathomed that the Giants would put forth arguably the worst passing performance in the franchise’s history.
Glennon finished the game completing 4 out of 11 passes for 24 yards and threw two interceptions. When you factor in the four times Glennon was sacked for 34 yards, New York finished the game with minus 10 yards passing. In fact, it’s the lowest yardage output in an NFL game since 1998.
New York’s offense was incompetent the entire game as every drop-back pass they attempted was a near disaster. The offensive line was manhandled by Chicago’s front seven, as Glennon was harassed the entire game.
The Giants’ passing game was so abysmal that despite being down 29-3, they knew their best play was to run the ball rather than have Glennon attempt another pass.
Saquon Barkley had his best performance of the year gaining 102 yards on 21 carries, but many of these yards occurred when the outcome of the game was already out of hand.
Last week it was reported that head coach Joe Judge will be back next season. But after being embarrassed by the Bears, you have to wonder if next week’s game against Washington will be the last for Judge.
The bottom line is the team is not responding to him, and they’re regressing. On Sunday the offense was dysfunctional and didn’t resemble a professional team.
At this moment, with the exception of the (2-14) Jacksonville Jaguars, it’s hard to see the Giants being favored to beat any team in the NFL.
The only positive after Sunday’s performance is that thankfully the Giants’ painful season will come to an end next week at home against the (6-10) Washington Football Team.
But the lingering question remains, will Mara keep Judge for another season? Or will he do the right thing and clean house and make major changes throughout the organization.
