Buffalo Bills training camp storylines
Monitoring Von Miller’s recovery from ACL tear
Acquired to be a difference maker for the Bills in 2022, Von Miller lived up to expectations. Unfortunately for Buffalo, he suffered a torn ACL late in the season and underwent surgery in December. The Bills have been coy regarding Miller’s timeline for a return and while the future Hall of Famer thinks he can play in Week 1, placing him on the PUP list is on the table. Heading into training camp, Miller’s health will be one of the biggest stories. Even if he returns before the regular season, there’s no telling what a 34-year-old edge rusher looks like in the early months back from an ACL tear. Any setbacks or limitations would have significant ramifications for the Bills defense in 2023.
Bills’ running back battle
Buffalo needs a viable rushing attack to make a Super Bowl run, it’s that simple. While the Bills ranked 11th in Football Outsiders’ Rush DVOA last season, the ground game was largely inconsistent and Josh Allen accounted for most of the explosive plays. James Cook showed promise as a rookie, averaging 5.7 yards per carry while recording 21 receptions in 16 games. But don’t sleep on Damien Harris, who boasts a career 4.7 yards per carry and is just two years removed from a 15-touchdown season. Midway through training camp, there could be a lot of buzz regarding this rushing attack.
Damar Hamlin’s return to football
This is definitively one of the things Buffalo Bills fans are looking forward to most this summer. After going into cardiac arrest on the field, nearly losing his life, Damar Hamlin has been cleared to resume full activity. Not only will he be out there for training camp, but he should also play a prominent role. The Bills will manage Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde’s reps this summer, providing Hamlin with an opportunity to prove himself. If all goes well, he’ll be a standout as Buffalo’s third safety this year.
