When the day began, Brock Purdy was the clear MVP favorite, with +260 odds to win. But that was before Mr. Irrelevant took on the Baltimore Ravens’ top-ranked scoring defense.
Purdy entered his Week 16 matchup with some of the best numbers among NFL QBs, tied for the fewest interceptions through 14 starts. Yet, just five plays into the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive attack, Purdy threw an interception, just his eighth of the season and 12th of his career.
Yet, that was just one interception; after all, he’s taking on the NFL’s best passing defense. Brush it off, move on to the next one.
Purdy settled down on San Francisco’s second drive, helping the 49ers get into scoring range to put three points on the board. But his next two drives ended up being a Christmas Day disaster, where Purdy threw interceptions on back-to-back drives. Later, after going three-and-out to start the second half, Purdy tossed his fourth interception of the night before leaving the game with an injury. Though he was cleared to resume to action, the 49ers just opted not to put him back in what was a 14-point deficit with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
The interceptions are very uncharacteristic for Purdy, who has never had a three-interception, let alone a four-pick game in his young NFL career. Yet, any time a quarterback struggles this much, social media can’t help but chime in. Here are some of the best reactions we found.
