Meanwhile, a recent guest host stint on “Jeopardy” could lead to a full-time job for Rodgers and a shocking retirement from the NFL at the age of 37.The backdrop here is the presence of 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love. Due to no fault of his own, Love pretty much led to this Rodgers-related drama with the Packers when they traded up for him in April of 2020.Interestingly enough, there’s some within Green Bay’s front office who believe that the Utah State product is not yet ready to take over for Rodgers should the future first ballot Hall of Famer not remain with the team. For pretty much the past two weeks, most of the NFL news we’ve read has come from reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
It was late in April that reports broke concluding Rodgers wants to be traded from the Packers after 16 Hall of Fame-worthy seasons. Rodgers, 37, is unhappy about Green Bay’s lack of commitment to him and the team’s recent personnel moves.
All the while, star Packers wide receiver Davante Adams also wants a long-term contract. One of the game’s best pass catchers is slated to become a free agent following the 2021 NFL season and is seen as vastly underpaid.
Appearing on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd on Monday, Adams might have given us an idea of how the Rodgers’ situation could impact his own future with Green Bay. Look away, Packers fans.
“Potentially. Potentially,” Adams said when asked if Rodgers might impact his contract talks with Green Bay. “That’s my guy. That’s the only guy I’ve had other than that 2017 season when he got hurt. That’s the only guy that I’ve played with. We’ve built up a special connection over the years that has put us both in really good positions in our career. Not that he needed me to come along for it, because he was already in that spot. We’ve established a lot together. It would change a lot, man. It doesn’t mean I’d be gone, but I’d definitely have to do some extra thinking if my guy wasn’t here.”
Davante Adams contract situation with the Green Bay Packers
Right now, Adams is playing under a mere four-year, $58 million extension he signed with Green Bay late in 2017. His $14.5 million average annual salary ranks 18th among NFL receivers.
To say that he’s underpaid would be a vast understatement. Adams, 28, recorded 115 receptions for 1,374 yards with a league-leading 18 touchdown catches in 2020. This represented his second 1,000-yard season in three years. Any new deal for Adams ahead of free agency would likely come in at north of $20 million annually.
Aaron Rodgers situation and how it impacts Packers players
It was noted recently that Aaron Rodgers has been telling certain teammates in Green Bay that he wants out of dodge since early on during the 2020 NFL season. Without evidence pointing in this direction, it stands to reason that Adams was one of those teammates. They are seen as incredibly close.
Right now, Rodgers continues to make it clear he has no intention of ever playing in Packers uniform again. He’s reportedly considering either opting out of the 2021 season or hanging up his cleats altogether. There’s also a possibility that Rodgers could turn to a full-time gig hosting “Jeopardy.”
The reigning NFL MVP is coming off a career-best 2020 season that saw him complete a league-leading 70.7% of his passes for 4,299 yards while topping all other quarterbacks with 48 touchdowns against a mere five interceptions.
