Giancarlo Stanton ‘getting close’ to joining Yankees

Giancarlo Stanton is one of the many New York Yankees stars on the injured list. But according to his manager, the slugging star’s return is near.

Aaron Boone noted on Tuesday that while Stanton won’t likely return for New York’s weekend series with the Kansas City Royals, he is “getting close” to rejoining the team.

When the Yankees are done with their weekend series in Kansas City, they’ll return home for three games against the San Diego Padres and four with the rival Boston Red Sox. If all goes according to plan in the rehab assignments, Stanton will likely return sometime during that home stand.

Stanton has been sidelined since the season’s opening series. He was initially placed on IL with a biceps injury. But his stay on the injured list was extended with a shoulder issue.

Stanton is one of several key Yankees to miss time this year. Aaron Judge has also been out for a month with an oblique injury but is inching toward a return.

In his limited 2018 campaign, Stanton has two hits (both singles) in eight at-bats. He also drew seven walks. In 2018, he hit .266/.343/.509 with 38 home runs in his first year with New York.
