San Francisco 49ers waive first-round bust Josh Rosen

Atlanta Falcons sign Josh Rosen

It sure looks like the San Francisco 49ers have settled on their three quarterbacks for the 2021 NFL season. That will not include former first-round bust Josh Rosen.

According to multiple media reports, San Francisco has opted to waive Rosen after picking him up off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad late last season.

Rosen, 24, saw limited action in the 49ers’ preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs last week — completing 10-of-15 passes for 93 yards with an interception.

A top-10 pick of the Arizona Cardinals back in 2018, the UCLA product played only one season in the desert. He started 13 games before ultimately being dealt to the Miami Dolphins during the 2019 NFL Draft after they selected Kyler Murray No. 1 overall. Rosen has not thrown a regular-season pass since October of 2019.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback situation appears to be somewhat settled

It still seems to be a foregone conclusion that Jimmy Garoppolo will be the Week 1 starter against the Detroit Lions despite the fact that rookie No. 3 pick Trey Lance has looked great this summer. For his part, Lance is expected to see the field in certain packages. He threw an 80-yard touchdown pass in his initial NFL preseason action with the San Francisco 49ers last week.

The decision to waive Rosen also means that free-agent signing Nate Sudfeld has likely earned the 49ers’ No. 3 job heading into the regular season.
