Philadelphia Eagles player charged with rape and kidnapping 11 days before Super Bowl

Just 11 days away from Super Bowl LVII, a member of the Philadelphia Eagles roster has been indicted on charges of rape and kidnapping stemming from an incident in December.

On Wednesday, prosecutors in Ohio officially pressed charges against Philadelphia Eagles rookie offensive lineman Josh Sills. In the court filing, officials in the Guernsey County sheriff’s office allege that the undrafted player “engaged in sexual activity that was not consensual and held a victim against her will.”

The formal charges come after an investigation and a grand jury decided to indict Sills on one felony count of rape and another felony count of kidnapping. The former Oklahoma State and West Virginia player is scheduled to appear in court five days after Super Bowl 57, on Feb. 16.

The Philadelphia Eagles have yet to make an official comment on the indictment this week.

Josh Sills was signed by the Eagles in the spring as an undrafted free agent. The 25-year-old from Sarahsville, Ohio played one season for West Virginia in 2017 before taking a two-year hiatus from competition.

Sills returned to the field in 2020 after transferring to Oklahoma State and played two seasons at the university. In his rookie season in the NFL, Josh Sills only appeared in one game for the Philadelphia Eagles during their run to this year’s Super Bowl.

On Wednesday afternoon, NFL Network league insider Ian Rapoport reported that the league took the step of placing Stills on the Commissioner Exempt List. “Sills may not participate in practices and games or travel with the team while on the List. It will be reviewed under the NFL’s personal conduct policy,” Rapoport said in a tweet.

The Philadelphia Eagles face the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL Championship game next Sunday on Fox.
