It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Houston Texans lack any sense of reality. NFL rumors continue to point to an ugly divorce with star quarterback Deshaun Watson after his request for a trade.

As we see other moves being made around the NFL during the start of the 2021 offseason, there has not been much coming from Houston’s newly-minted brass. In reality, most of the talk has come from Watson’s camp. He wants out. It’s as clear as day. Heck, the quarterback could even opt to sit out the entire 2021 season rather than suit up for this downtrodden organization.

Even then, it appears that teams looking to trade for Watson are being turned away at nearly every turn as this situation draws on between the quarterback and his organization.

Houston Texans won’t talk Deshaun Watson trade with interested teams

“According to two high-level executives from different teams in the quarterback market, Texans brass have told interested teams that they will not be having any conversations about trading Watson,” Kalyn Kahler of Bleacher Report noted on Tuesday.

New Texans general manager Nick Caserio had previously gone on record indicating that they have no interest in trading Watson. That’s fine and dandy. But given the noise we’re hearing from Watson’s camp, the drama of prolonging the inevitable could lead to more issues for an organization that’s attempting to move on from the dark ending to Bill O’Brien’s tenure as head coach and general manager.

There’s also some major issues for teams attempting to contact the Texans about a possible Deshaun Watson trade.

“It’s Houston right now,” one high-ranking league executive said. “They don’t have any rhyme or reason on what they have done over the last year-and-a-half.”

As NFL rumors continue to link about half of the league to Watson in a trade, it’s clear that the Texans are hoping this whole thing blows over. That’s highly unlikely to be the case given just how upset the reigning NFL passing champion was over Houston’s interview process when it came to a new head coach and general manager. Watson also reportedly has no real relationship with owner Cal McNair, complicating things further.

Despite Texans’ stance, NFL rumors continue to link Deshaun Watson to other teams

Teams are still calling up Houston about a potential trade. They are attempting to make offers that the Texans might not be able to refuse. The above-linked report from Kahler suggests that Houston wants three first-round picks and a starter-caliber quarterback in exchange for Watson. At the very least, that would be a starting-off point. This falls in line with other previous suggestions regarding the Texans’ asking price.

If Houston is unwilling to talk trade offers, why is it the worst-kept secret in football what they are demanding in a deal for Watson? Something is not aligning here. Basic common sense suggests that the Texans’ stance behind the scenes is merely to up the ante when it comes to trade offers.

Let’s say for a second that the Texans are looking for a quarterback as part of a package in a Deshaun Watson trade, a number of teams make sense. The New York Jets (Sam Darnold), Miami Dolphins (Tua Tagovailoa), San Francisco 49ers (Jimmy Garoppolo), Philadelphia Eagles (Carson Wentz/Jalen Hurts), Carolina Panthers (Teddy Bridgewater) and Denver Broncos (Drew Lock) are all in that category.

For now, it appears to be a waiting pattern as other teams figure out what the heck Houston is doing behind the scenes. Offers are ready. Teams are prepared to make a move.

What is Houston going to do now? It’s a million-dollar question with the offseason getting going in full swing.
