The Dallas Cowboys are stuck between a rock and a hard place following Week 7’s blowout loss to the Washington Football Team. Quarterback Andy Dalton suffered a concussion on a brutal hit by Washington linebacker Jon Bostic. He might not be able to go Week 8. This has led to rumors that the Cowboys could look to trade for a quarterback ahead of the Nov. 3 NFL trade deadline.
Dallas will likely be forced to start rookie seventh-round pick Ben DiNucci under center Sunday night against the first-place Philadelphia Eagles. Obviously, this comes weeks after franchise quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a devastating season-ending ankle injury.
Still in contention in the NFC East despite losing four of their first six games, the Cowboys could very well opt to trade for a quarterback here soon. We already know that Jerry Jones is never about throwing in that proverbial towel. If so, here’s a look at options for the Cowboys on the trade rumor mill ahead of the the Nov. 3 deadline.

Cowboys trade for Jacoby Brissett
Currently in the final year of the two-year, $30 million contract he signed with the Colts back in September of 2019, rumors have persisted around the NFL world that Indy could look to trade Brissett. He has thrown all of four regular-season passes behind starting quarterback Philip Rivers this season.
Last season saw Brissett throw for 2,942 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions in 15 starts. At the very least, he’d be an upgrade over DiNucci. Obviously, that’s also dependent on the severity of Dalton’s concussion. What we do know is that it would likely take nothing more than a mid-round pick to swing a deal for Brissett ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

Cowboys trade for Ryan Fitzpatrick
It’s pretty clear that Fitzpatrick is not happy that he was benched in favor of Tua Tagovailoa for the Dolphins’ Week 9 game. The veteran had been a top-10 quarterback in the NFL this season, leading Miami to a surprising 3-3 start to the campaign. That span saw Fitzpatrick average 256 passing yards per game with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The question here as it relates to potential Fitzpatrick to the Cowboys rumors is how Dallas’ brass feels about Fitzpatrick. Is he an upgrade over Dalton in the team’s mind? If so, rumors will pick up on this front moving forward. The NFL is all about the now. Fitzpatrick and his mere $8 million cap hit coupled with the low cost of trading for him could make this attractive to the Cowboys.
Cowboys trade for Sam Darnold
Whether rumors of the Jets looking to trade Darnold ahead of the deadline early next month are true remains to be seen. New York has already sold off multiple veteran assets. Head coach Adam Gase has handled Darnold about as poorly as anyone could have imagined after the Jets made him the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

With the Jets now being considered the front runner to land Trevor Lawrence with the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, they might look to move Darnold. It would be akin to what we saw with the Cardinals and Josh Rosen early last year. If that does come to fruition, rumors linking the Cowboys to Darnold would make sense.
It likely wouldn’t take as much as a first-round pick to acquire the former USC standout. It would also potentially give the Cowboys another option should the Dak Prescott contract situation continue to drag on.
Cowboys trade for Matt Ryan
We couldn’t finish this article without looking at a potential blockbuster trade. Rumors continue to pop up that the Atlanta Falcons might trade former NFL MVP Matt Ryan following the firing of Dan Quinn. It would be a way for the 1-6 Falcons to start anew with a rebuild.
This potential blockbuster trade wouldn’t be without complications. First off, the Falcons would take a major dead cap hit by trading the veteran. Secondly, they would likely be looking at a first-round pick and change for the still-elite signal caller.

Even then, I would not put this past Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. Ryan, 35, leads the NFL with 2,181 passing yards this season. He’s also thrown 12 touchdowns compared to three interceptions. We’re not talking about a stopgap option for the Cowboys. Instead, a trade for Ryan would spell the end of Prescott’s tenure in Big D.
