One of the New York Mets’ best pitching prospects is getting closer to possibly making his big league debut in 2023.
This has been a very frustrating season thus far for the New York Mets. With the team a couple of weeks into June, they are four games under .500 at 32-36 and second to last in a competitive National League East. There are several reasons for their struggles this season, but their pitching staff is a major part of it.

While Japanese import Kodai Senga has been rock solid in his first season in MLB, the team’s two aces have disappointed. Both Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander have ERA’s well above 4.00 and have shown obvious signs of age in a season where they are both making $43 million a piece. Furthermore, the back of their starting rotation has been bad, and their bullpen has offered very mixed results.
While the lineup has seen an influx of young top prospects from the team’s minor leagues this season — including talented catcher Francisco Alvarez — their pitching staff has no seen the addition of notable youngsters from the system. That could soon change.
New York Mets stud pitching prospect Matt Vasil promoted to Triple-A
On Monday, New York Newsday Mets reporter Tim Healey revealed that the team had promoted elite pitching talent Matt Vasil from Double-A to Triple-A Syracuse. The move is a major moment for the organization since Vasil is the highest-ranked arm in the New York farm system that is actually close to actually reaching the big league level.
During his 2023 campaign in Binghamton, Matt Vasil pitched to a 3.71 ERA and 0.84 WHIP. In his 10 starts, he struck out 57 batters and walked just eight in 51 innings. Unsurprisingly his promotion came after a dominant month of May where he actually won the Eastern League Pitcher of the Month.
There are some New York Mets observers that believe Vasil had the chance to reach the MLB roster this season. The 23-year-old’s promotion and the staff’s struggles seem to strengthen the chance that he is pitching in Flushing in the next month or so.
