The New York Jets’ quarterback situation will likely take a dramatic turn over the course of the next several weeks.
It’s not a secret that owner Woody Johnson and Co. are attempting to find an upgrade over struggling youngster Zach Wilson. New York’s decision to bench the former No. 2 overall pick multiple times during his sophomore season added another layer to this.
The backdrop here are continued rumors that the Jets will make a play for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a blockbuster trade.
On the very same day it’s being reported that multiple teams have calls out to Green Bay inquiring on Rodgers, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler notes that the Jets have already put in a call.
This fits in with the narrative that New York plans on being big-time players for Rodgers in a blockbuster trade. The aforementioned Johnson did not quiet these rumors in the lead up to Thursday’s NFL Honors show.

“You want the best quarterback that you can get to lead the Jets. I can’t really talk about him, because he’s a member of another club, but everybody recognizes talent when they see it.”

None of this is coming out of left field. The No. 2 overall pick of the New York Jets back in 2021, Wilson fell out of favor big time as a sophomore. He struggled doing anything on the field and showed a lack of maturity that usually isn’t on display for a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Through two seasons, Wilson has compiled 15 touchdown passes compared to 18 interceptions while boasting an 8-14 record in 22 starts. Those just aren’t starter-caliber numbers.
As for Rodgers and a potential pairing in Jersey, the four-time NFL MVP is about to embark on a “darkness retreat” to decide on his future. He has yet to commit to playing in 2023. But if Rodgers does indeed come back, it likely won’t be with the Packers.
