Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers is about to enter into a four-day darkness retreat (that’s a thing) in order to contemplate his playing future.
As the 39-year-old Rodgers decides what to do moving forward, reports suggest that teams have already inquired about a potential trade with the Green Bay Packers. At this point, Green Bay is not willing to discuss the parameters of a deal because it has no idea whether Rodgers will return for another season or retire altogether.
“Sources say other teams have already inquired about Rodgers, and the answer from Green Bay has been consistent: until Rodgers decides what he wants to do, it’s too early for any negotiations,” NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero on Aaron Rodgers trade talks.
The two NFL insiders went on to report that Green Bay will need Rodgers to rework his current contract in order to help felicitate a trade, “allowing him to steer the process toward a preferred destination.”
That latter point is interesting. Depending on Rodgers’ decision and how trade talks with other teams go, he could dictate where he lands next.

As currently structured, the extension Rodgers signed with Green Bay last offseason would result in a $99.78 million dead cap hit if he were traded. Obviously, that’s not a realistic option for the Packers.

Several reports indicate that the Packers would prefer to trade Rodgers if he opts to return. In this scenario, former first-round pick Jordan Love would take over as the starter.
Green Bay has until early May to decide whether it is going to pick up Love’s contract option for the 2024 season, paying him what would be a guaranteed $20.27 million. Obviously, that would act as a deadline as it relates to the Rodgers’ situation.
Though, we’re expecting something more concrete here within the next few weeks. Once Rodgers makes his decision, the Packers can work hard to trade the future Hall of Famer to a team of his choosing.
Right now, Rodgers is being linked mostly to the New York Jets. They just hired former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in the same role. Meanwhile, Jets owner Woody Johnson has not been quiet in assessing the Jets’ quarterback situation and the need for an upgrade. He didn’t beat around the bushes recently when asked specifically about Rodgers.
“You want the best quarterback that you can get to lead the Jets. I can’t really talk about him, because he’s a member of another club, but everybody recognizes talent when they see it.”

There wouldn’t be a shortage of interest in Rodgers on the trade block should he decide on continuing his playing career. In addition to the Jets, he’s been linked to the Las Vegas Raiders on a near never-ending loop. It’s in this that a reunion with former teammate Davante Adams could be in the cards.
The New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints are among the several teams likely set to look for an upgrade at quarterback during the offseason.
