A new report claims that Drake Maye is the New York Giants’ top choice in Round 1 of Thursday’s NFL Draft, however, in the likelihood they can’t secure a trade for his services they could use the sixth pick overall on a player not seen as a top 10 talent in this year’s draft class.

This is going to be a very important week in the regime of Giants head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. After the roster regressed and several top draft picks underperformed in 2023 there is now doubt if they are the men to turn the team back into a consistent winner.

While they have several holes they need to fill at this week’s event, quarterback is rumored to be a top priority after the breakout 2022 season of incumbent starter — and former first-round pick — Daniel Jones now looks to be a flash in the pan.

However, in recent weeks there have been all sorts of rumors claiming the Giants’ brain trust is either high on Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, or Jayden Daniels. However, a new report from ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano claims that the recent McCarthy rumors may be inaccurate and Maye is the player New York most covets.

But chances are that Maye is off the board within the top three picks and no team has come close to convincing the Washington Commanders (No. 2) or the New England Patriots (No. 3) to trade their picks. Assuming the Giants stay at No. 6, the league insider claims the team’s desperation for a QB prospect this year may lead them to reach again with a top pick like they did with Jones in 2019.

“I’ve also been told in recent days that the Giants like [Michael] Penix Jr. and might even be willing to take him as high as No. 6. There’s a lot of chatter flying around, but what is clear is that the Giants have done significant work on the quarterbacks and are very open, if not desperate, to come out of Thursday night with one of them,” Graziano wrote.

There has been a lot of momentum behind Penix Jr. in recent weeks, however, his long injury history should be cause for concern. Especially since he would be the replacement for another player with a lengthy injury past.

There is also a possibility the New York Giants could trade down and land the same player at a more reasonable spot on April 25.
