The Boston Red Sox finally made their big offensive splash, landing Alex Bregman on a three-year, $120 million deal with opt-outs and deferred money. While they’ve rebuilt their rotation and bullpen, plenty of questions still hang over the team as they head into 2025.

Should Alex Bregman play second or third?

Bregman is a Gold Glove-winning third baseman, but Rafael Devers won’t budge from that spot despite being one of the worst defenders at the position. So Bregman appears headed to second base, even though the Red Sox would be better off with him at third and Devers as the full-time DH. That move would also open up second base for top prospect Kristian Campbell.

The Red Sox boast three of baseball’s best prospects in Campbell, Romany Anthony, and Marcelo Mayer, all knocking on the door of Fenway. But when will they get their shot? Campbell might be blocked if Bregman takes second, though he could slide to shortstop if Trevor Story can’t stay healthy. Anthony’s path to the outfield is crowded right now but injuries could change that. As for Mayer, he probably needs more Triple-A time after injuries derailed his 2024 season.

Will Red Sox go with six-man rotation during season?

The rotation got a complete makeover with ace Garrett Crochet, two-time All-Star Walker Buehler, and Patrick Sandoval joining the mix, though Sandoval won’t be ready until midseason after Tommy John surgery. They’ll join Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Lucas Giolito, who’s also coming back from an arm injury. Don’t be surprised if the Red Sox go with a six-man rotation to keep everyone fresh and healthy.

The ninth inning is still up in the air after future Hall of Famer Kenley Jansen bolted for the Los Angeles Angels. They brought in Aroldis Chapman (14 saves with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024) and Justin Wilson (20 career saves), plus they have Liam Hendriks, who missed all of 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery and forearm issues. But who’s getting the ball in the ninth?

The Red Sox haven’t been baseball’s elite for a while now. They’ve landed in the AL East basement three times in the last five years and haven’t seen October baseball since 2021. It’s been rough for Red Sox Nation watching their team struggle. Will adding Crochet, Buehler, and Bregman while mixing in those top prospects finally get them back to the playoffs? We’ll have to wait and see.
