Ever since the Washington Commanders were officially on the market, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, as the third-richest person in the world, seemed like a strong suitor to purchase the football franchise.
Not only does Forbes pen Bezos’ net worth at an astounding $120.9 billion, but the 59-year-old has also expressed interest in purchasing a major professional sports team in the past and currently owns the Washington Post, giving him strong ties to the area.
Naturally, the Commanders, as the latest NFL franchise to be put up for sale, on paper, Bezos seemed like a legitimate candidate to get involved in the bidding process.
According to Theodore Schleifer of Puck.news, Bezos is not currently involved in trying to purchase the Commanders and has no intent to get involved.
Instead, the Josh Harris group, who has reportedly submitted a $6 billion bid, seems to be the frontrunner to become the new majority owner of the Commanders. Canadien entrepreneur Steve Apostolopoulos is also believed to be aiming to put a bid together.
Either way, at $6 billion, the Commanders would shatter the previous North American sports franchise sales record, previously set by the Denver Broncos in 2022, at $4.65 billion. Yet, the actual sale of the team doesn’t seem anywhere close.
