Veteran Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been around the NFL since 1999, one year before Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady started to make his way in the league.

The two have seen their careers cross paths many times, culminating in Sunday’s Super Bowl LV matchup between the Chiefs and Buccaneers.

Spagnuolo took time out of his busy week of preparation for Sunday’s huge game to talk with Sportsnaut’s Rich Salgado on Big Daddy & Friends. He discussed a potential head coach job moving forward and the above-mentioned matchup against Tom Terrific.

Steve Spagnuolo opens up about potentially getting another head coach gig

“That would be a great thing. I would certainly embrace it,” Spagnuolo told Sportsnaut’s Rich Salgado about getting another head coach job. “If it doesn’t happen, I am a blessed man either way. I got a great job. Great friends like you. We’ll see what happens. What the future holds.”

Spagnuolo, 61, was the head coach for the then Los Angeles Rams from 2009-11, posting a disastrous 11-41 record. He then served as the New York Giants interim head coach in 2017, leading the team to a 1-3 record after the firing of Ben McAdoo.

He’s had much more success as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, leading three top-10 units in stints with the Giants, Saints and Chiefs.

As for the entire Brady equation, Spagnuolo also opened up about going up against the six-time Super Bowl champion in Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Steve Spagnuolo talks matchup with Tom Brady

Spagnuolo’s first season as an NFL defensive coordinator came with the New York Giants in 2007. Interestingly enough, that season also culminated in New York pulling off a massive upset against Brady and his former New England Patriots team.

New England posted a perfect 16-0 regular-season record with Brady absolutely dominating the opposition to the tune of 50 touchdowns against eight interceptions. The team averaged 36.8 points per game. Heck, New England was 12.5 point favorites in the game.

Despite this, Spagnuolo’s defense held the Patriots to 14 points with Brady throwing just one touchdown pass and being sacked five times. Does the veteran defensive coordinator think that will translate to Super Bowl LV?

“Well listen, I’d like to think all of that helps in the next game. But it doesn’t. It’s a whole new challenge. He has some weapons there. And listen, they’ve hit their groove,” Spagnuolo continued. “Great chemistry. It will be a great challenge for us.
