Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles: Grading Super Bowl LVII offenses

The Super Bowl LVII matchup pitting the Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles has many NFL fans pumped for Sunday night because it features two of the very best offenses in the league this season.

For the majority of 2022-2023 in the NFL, the Chiefs and Eagles stood above their conference contemporaries. While the Philadelphia defense played a major role in their success in winning the NFC Championship, both teams dominated at times during the last five months because of the outstanding play from their offensive units. That is why both teams are ranked at the top of our latest NFL offense rankings.

Yet, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles’ approach to championship-level offense is different. And it begs the question: Which offense in Super Bowl 57 is better? We grade both and decide which group is more formidable.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been one of the elite offenses in the league for the last half-decade because of the brilliant offensive minds of head coach Andy Reid, offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy, and the amazing play of two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes.

  • Patrick Mahomes stats (’22-’23): 5,250 passing yards, 41 TD, 12 INT, 105.2 rating

The trio was able to maintain their high standard this season despite trading away superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill in the offseason. However, the top yards-per-game team in the NFL still has future Hall-of-Famer Travis Kelce as a key target, and he was able to pick up the slack for Hill while other players chipped in to help lead the team to this year’s Super Bowl.

Passing game: A

Mahomes won this year’s MVP award despite not having a receiver who reeled in over 1,000 yards. But, he did have a tight end that played the role of WR1 in Kelce, who had another ridiculous showing in 2022-2023 as he reeled in over 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns.

  • Travis Kelce stats (’22-’23): 110 catches, 1,338 yards, 12 TD

Despite only having one legitimate star pass catcher — no disrespect to JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling — Mahomes’ play this season — as he threw for over 300 yards 11 times — elevated a sound passing game to elite levels through his sheer excellence.

Running game: C

The Chief’s rushing game suffers due to the greatness of their QB. It is understandable that the coaches rather have the ball in Mahomes’ hands as much as possible and invest more in receivers and talented pass-blocking linemen. Due to that fact, the Kansas City Chiefs run game is only a solid group that will not put much fear in the hearts of the Eagles’ defenders.

With that said, rookie running back Isiah Pacheco should not be underestimated and has far exceeded expectations as a seventh-round pick with his 830 yards on the ground this season.

Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia Eagles’ offense

This season, third-year QB Jalen Hurts took a huge leap forward in his development under head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen. He went from a player with franchise QB potential to an MVP finalist.

However, the dual-threat signal-caller received massive help from a gritty offensive line that opened holes all season for Pro Bowler Miles Sanders. Furthermore, offseason acquisition AJ Brown and incumbent receiver DeVonta Smith became one of the best wideout combos in the league in ’22-’23.

  • Jalen Hurts stats (’22-23): 3,701 passing yards, 22 TD, 6 INT, 101.6 rating

Passing game: B-

Jalen Hurts’ stats pale in comparison to that of his Super Bowl counterpart, however, that is because he is just as dangerous with his legs as he is with his arm. Nevertheless, the passing game was highly effective this season as both Brown and Smith surpassed 1,000 yards threw the air.

  • AJ Brown stats (’22-’23): 88 catches, 1,496 yards, 11 TD

Tight end Dallas Goedert also is a very solid third option for a strong attack that will continue to get better.

Running game: A

The Philadelphia Eagles are a beastly running attack. They were the fourth-best yards-per-game team in the league this season and had 32 touchdowns due to Sanders’ excellent play and Hurts tallying 760 yards and an absurd 13 TDs of his own on the ground. They continued that dominance in the postseason by averaging over 200 yards a game and scoring four TDs against a phenomenal 49ers defense in the NFC Championship.

Final Results

Mahomes is a special talent for the Kansas City Chiefs and his skills and intangibles make their offense elite. However, as a whole, the Philadephia Eagles’ offense is one of the most complete in the game and can beat you more than one way. Plus, having a dominant rushing attack in the biggest games has been a recipe for success for as long as the NFL has existed. Winner: Eagles
