In his return to action Sunday night, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo turned the ball over three times as his team fell to the Indianapolis Colts by the score of 30-18 at home.

For San Francisco, this represented the team’s fourth consecutive defeat. At some point, head coach Kyle Shanahan and Co. have to come to the realization that this is a lost season and it’s time to see what rookie No. 3 pick Trey Lance has to offer.

Apparently, we’re not at that point. Even with Lance set to return to practice this week after suffering a knee sprain earlier in October, Shanahan has already named Garoppolo the 49ers’ Week 8 starter against the Chicago Bears.

Jimmy Garoppolo to start Week 8

This is bound to go over well with the fan base in Northern California. The 49ers were a complete disaster with Garoppolo under center Sunday night in rainy conditions at Levi’s Stadium. That included the quarterback throwing two interceptions, losing a fumble and putting the ball on the turf another time.

Meanwhile, San Francisco continues to roll with Garoppolo under center despite the fact that he has no long-term future with the organization.

Remember, general manager John Lynch and Co. dealt away two future first-round picks and change to move up to the No. 3 spot for Lance back in April. At 2-4 on the season and 4.5 games behind the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West, San Francisco is highly unlikely to make the playoffs. Most believe it’s time to give Lance some run.

Alas, that’s not the case. Jimmy Garoppolo will start again Sunday in Chicago after having accounted for seven total touchdowns against seven turnovers in five starts this season.
