Indiana Pacers a ‘strong contender’ to land Harrison Barnes in free agency

The Indiana Pacers head into the summer not expected to land one of the top NBA free agents available. However, there is reportedly a growing buzz suggesting they’ll head into next season with a new starting forward who brings playoff experience and added chemistry to the team.

Indiana is tentatively projected to have the third-most practical cap space this offseason, operating with just over $30 million to spend. The Pacers won’t be factors for any of the premium forwards that are available, but the organization does appear to have its sights set on adding one player who prominent members of the franchise want on the team.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Indiana is viewed as a “strong contender” to sign Barnes in NBA free agency. Barnes’ relationship with Tyrese Haliburton and his support from head coach Rick Carlisle are strong factors making Indiana an emerging favorite to land the veteran forward.

Haliburton and Barnes spent over 100 games together with the Sacramento Kings, building on-court chemistry and a friendship away from the arena. With Indiana prioritizing players who gel with its All-Star guard and can be a positive presence in the locker room, Barnes is a natural fit.

The 31-year-old forward is also very familiar with Carlisle. He played for the Pacers’ coach during their time together with the Dallas Mavericks. Years later, Carlisle remains a fan of Barnes’ game and leadership, which he believes would be valuable additions to the Pacers’ lineup and locker room next season.

Barnes is an affordable short-term option for Indiana, with a multi-year deal unlikely to eat significantly into the team’s long-term cap flexibility. While there will be competition from the Kings to sign him, Sacramento’s desire to upgrade its starting lineup could lead to Barnes playing for the Pacers next season.
