Eagles rumors: Still a good chance the team trades Carson Wentz

Philadelphia Eagles rumors surrounding a potential trade of Carson Wentz have died down some since they hired Nick Sirianni to replace Doug Pederson as head coach.

Sirianni served as Frank Reich’s offensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts over the past three seasons. If you remember, Reich’s presence with the Eagles is what helped turn Wentz into a quarterback many figured would be franchise-caliber prior to his struggles over the past couple seasons.

This seemed to suggest that Philadelphia was prepared to give it another go with Wentz after he was benched for then-rookie Jalen Hurts last season. Not so fast.

Philadelphia Eagles could still trade Carson Wentz

“And (Wentz) wants to leave the franchise. OK, and that’s why the trade still is in play. Again, people wondering where did this stuff come from at the end of the year, was it made. This is all real. None of this is made up,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted on 95.7 The Fanatic. “And just because he would like to be moved or hasn’t commented, it doesn’t mean he will be.”

That’s the issue right now for the Eagles. Howie Roseman and Co. might want to keep Carson Wentz around. However, the struggling quarterback continues to make it clear behind the scenes that he wants a divorce.

Coming off a 2020 season that saw him tie for the league lead in interceptions with 15, it makes little sense for Philadelphia to create unnecessary drama by refusing to trade the former No. 2 pick. The presence of Hurts under center after a strong initial showing last season adds another layer to this.

Philadelphia Eagles rumors will continue to point to a Carson Wentz trade

It’s now rather clear that we’re going to hear a lot more about this in the coming days and weeks. Following the blockbuster Matthew Stafford trade to the Los Angeles Rams, we’re getting a bit more clarity on quarterback situations around the NFL.

In no way does that mean things are going to die down on this front. Wentz joins the likes of Deshaun Watson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, Sam Darnold, Tua Tagovailoa and Kirk Cousins as quarterbacks who could be on the trade market.

Meanwhile, a good 13 teams could still be looking for new starting quarterbacks this offseason. Of those, squads such as the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers would make sense for Carson Wentz.

From there, Eagles rumors will look specifically at compensation. Detroit was able to receive Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick for Stafford. While initial indications were that the compensation was due to Goff’s bloated contract, some believe that the Lions honestly valued what he could bring to the table moving forward.

Wentz, 28, is currently playing under a four-year, $128 million extension he signed with Philadelphia back in 2019. While his cap hit of $34.63 million this coming season is high, Wentz is due a base salary of a mere $15.4 million.

That’s what any team trading for the No. 2 pick would be looking at taking on before seeing dramatic increases from 2022-24. This seems to suggest, based primarily on the quarterback market, that Philadelphia might receive more in a Carson Wentz trade that initially thought.
