Denver Broncos training camp storylines
The beginning of the Sean Payton era
Denver paid a premium to acquire Payton from the New Orleans Saints this past offseason. The idea is to give Wilson that noted offensive-minded coach to work under after failing with one-and-done head coach Nathaniel Hackett a season ago.
Payton’s history speaks for itself. During his 15-year run in New Orleans, Payton-led offenses finished in the top 10 in scoring 12 times. To put this into perspective, the Broncos have not seen a top-10 scoring offense since all the way back in 2014. That’s where the dynamic of Payton could come into play in 2023 and beyond.
New-look Denver Broncos offensive line
Forty percent of the Broncos’ starting offensive line is new. It didn’t come cheap with Denver exhausting a combined $139 million on left guard Ben Powers and right tackle Mike McGlinchey. An argument can be made that GM George Paton overpaid. But it made perfect sense to invest in the line after Wilson was sacked a league-high 55 times this past season.
Payton’s offensive system will help a lot in that he relies more on a quick passing game. But we’re intrigued to see how this new-look line looks in front of him, especially against a solid pass rush Denver boasts on the other side of the ball.

Starting cornerback situation opposite Patrick Surtain
A first-time All-Pro this past season, Surtain is among the best cornerbacks in the game. He yielded a mere 82.6 QB rating and 6.1 yards per target as a sophomore in 2022. Denver knows it has a building block in the former first-round pick.
Unfortunately, there are issues opposite him in the defensive backfield. Tremon Smith, Damarri Mathis and rookie Riley Moss will be among those competing during Broncos training camp. A journeyman during his five-year career, Smith has the most experience among the group. That includes just five career starts.
Russell Wilson in a new offense
We previously touched on Payton’s offensive scheme and how it should be a fit for Wilson. That includes a quick strike passing game, which relies a lot on accuracy and yards after the catch. In his first season with the Broncos, Wilson completed a career-low 60.5% of his passes. For his career, the future Hall of Famer is converting on 65% of his pass attempts.
It will be telling initially if Wilson has picked up the nuances of Payton’s offense. We’ll be able to see this during Broncos training camp before the preseason gets going. A solid level of comfort during the summer months could very well translate to immediate success once Week 1 comes calling.
