The Dallas Cowboys were reminded last season how valuable depth on the offensive line is for a team. It’s a lesson many franchises know well and exactly why Cowboys’ guard Connor McGovern is generating trade interest.

McGovern, the 90th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is not related to New York Jets center Connor McGovern. But both young linemen play a valuable position and with the Cowboys starting to trim their roster before cut day, general managers are inquiring about a valuable depth piece for Dallas.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, multiple NFL teams are interested in acquiring McGovern and view him as an upgrade for their offensive lines. But to this point, Dallas is very reluctant to remove him and is just as high on him as other clubs.

The Cowboys shouldn’t part with McGovern unless another team is willing to overpay. Zack Martin missed six games in 2020 and durability has been a problem for the entire offensive line. McGovern played 604 snaps at right guard last season and demonstrated in college that he can also play center.

Jerry Jones saw what happened to this offense when injuries depleted the trenches. The running game became more ineffective, Andy Dalton was under constant pressure and this team lacked rhythm. Even if McGovern doesn’t start immediately, he offers significant value for this franchise.

Barring another club offering a Day 2 pick in a deep 2022 NFL Draft class, expect McGovern to serve as the Cowboys’ key reserve on the line this season.
