Carson Wentz is one of the top NFL free agents still available on the open market as teams head into the summer. Months after being released by the Washington Commanders, Wentz will have opportunities to stick around in the NFL next season.
Wentz, age 30, was selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The former North Dakota State star quickly became one of the best, young quarterbacks in the NFL. From 2017-’19, Wentz earned an All-Pro selection and became one of the highest-paid NFL players.

The 6-foot-5 quarterback was on a trajectory to become a perennial NFL MVP candidate. However, his effectiveness plummeted in 2020 – 72.8 QB rating, 57.4% completion rate – and the Philadelphia Eagles traded him to the Indianapolis Colts.
Wentz only lasted one year in Indianapolis before being traded to the Commanders. However, he couldn’t regain the form he displayed during his best years and Washington quickly moved on from him this offseason. Months later, he remains a free agent.

Appearing on SportsCenter, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that Wentz has received interest from several NFL teams and he’s willing to sign on for any role as long as he gets to play.
“I was told he’s been working out in L.A., plans to play this year. He’s had interest from some teams. He’s open to various roles; could be as a starter, could be as a backup, but he just wants to play this coming year.”

Wentz must accept a backup role if he wants to sign with an NFL team before the regular season. As of now, all 32 teams either have an established starter in place or are satisfied with the quarterbacks on their roster.

It’s a fall from grace for Wentz, who has also dealt with negative reports about his coachability and likeability in the locker room. While contract offers will likely come at some point this offseason, Wentz faces an uphill battle to become a starting quarterback again.
