The 2023 season was no good for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. They closed up shop on a four-win campaign by virtue of a 17-3 home loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.
This represents the Patriots’ worst performance since back in 1992 when Belichick was coaching the Cleveland Browns.
The backdrop here includes continued rumors that the six-time Super Bowl champion will move on from the Patriots after 24 years.
Belichick addressed these rumors shortly after New England lost to the Jets on Sunday. He didn’t really have much to see outside of the fact that he’ll be meeting with Patriots owner Robert Kraft later in the week.
“As far as the future goes, I’ll sit down with [team owner Robert Kraft]—as we do every year at some point at the end of the season—and we’ll talk about things, as we always do,” Bill Belichick told reporters. “I’m sure that will happen. But that’s really about all I have to say about that right now.”
Bill Belichick coaching record: 302-165, 6 Super Bowl titles
Despite his overall brilliant record, Belichick has led some struggles in New England recently. That includes posting a combined 29-38 record since Tom Brady’s departure following the 2019 season.
It has led to a growing sense of frustration on the part of Kraft. That was taken to a whole new level after New England fell to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany back in November.
If this is indeed the end of the line for Belichick in New England, he’ll likely head to another team via a trade. Most reports have linked Belichick to the Washington Commanders. However, the Los Angeles Chargers are also a potential landing spot after they fired Brandon Staley.
