Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is playing at an elite level once again, leading the NFL MVP race and carrying one of the best teams in football. Now, just months after an offseason full of drama between Rodgers and the Packers, a return to Green Bay in 2022 could be likelier than ever.

The 38-year-old created headlines this week by talking about the possibility of retiring after the 2021 season. While he didn’t provide any definitive answers, the future Hall of Fame quarterback said it’s possible he could hang up his cleats after Green Bay’s season ends.

But for all the attention generated from Rodgers’ comments about retiring, one part of his quote was largely ignored. Immediately after saying on “The Pat McAfee Show” that it is under consideration, Rodgers also said that playing at a high level is very important to him and he is enjoying everything about the 2021 season.

“If this year has taught me anything, it’s I still can play. I still have a love for the game. I’m still super competitive and still enjoy the process of the week. I miss practice, and it’s tough to not be out there. I still do love competing and I love being out there.”

While it’s no surprise that he is competing for another MVP award, Rodgers’ feelings about the situation in Green Bay are very different than what he expressed this summer. He openly criticized the front office amid reports of a rift with general manager Brian Gutekunst.

But the relationship between the Packers’ quarterback and general manager is in a better place. It’s the direct result of Gutekunst being more aggressive in free agency, both during the regular season and in the offseason. With Rodgers also receiving more input in the process, everything is smooth in Green Bay.

NFL insiders are also taking notice. Talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback targets in 2022, NFL reporter Charles Robinson said on Yahoo Sports’ “You Pod to Win the Game” podcast that he thinks there is little chance Rodgers leaves Green Bay for any reason in 2022.

“I highly doubt Rodgers is leaving Green Bay at this point, in any way shape or form.”

Green Bay is facing significant cap restraints this offseason, projected to be $30-plus million over the rocketing NFL salary cap. But if Rodgers is committed to the franchise, an answer the front office will receive almost immediately, there’s reason to believe this team will remain a Super Bowl contender with Rodgers leading the way once again.
