Week 5 fantasy rankings

The first month of the 2023 NFL season is in the books, meaning we have more data points and film to put together our Week 5 fantasy rankings. As always, we’ll provide analysis and fantasy football advice for some of the top players at each position.

There are plenty of things to keep an eye on for Week 5. In terms of injuries, Jimmy Garoppolo, Odell Beckham Jr, Saquon Barkley, Tee Higgins, Jonathan Taylor and Cooper Kupp all need to be monitored. Meanwhile, this is the first wave of bye weeks with the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on rest.

Week 5 fantasy QB rankings based on 4 points per passing touchdown
  1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs – After facing one of the NFL’s best pass defenses in 2023, Patrick Mahomes heads into Week 5 with a matchup against a Minnesota Vikings defense that has allowed a 76.6% completion rate this season with a 7-1 TD-INT line. If Mahomes doesn’t produce elite fantasy numbers, we’d be shocked.
  2. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens – Against statistically the best defense right now, Lamar Jacksons cored four touchdowns and finished with a 79% completion rate. Don’t let the low passing totals fool you, Jackson is playing at an MVP-caliber level right now. With Pittsburgh allowing 254.5 pass ypg and 7.9 yards per attempt, Jackson has a shot to be QB1 in Week 5.
  3. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills – Since that dreadful season-opening performance, Josh Allen has 812 passing yards with 70 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns. Jacksonville’s defense has fared better as of late, but a 65.2% completion rate and six passing touchdowns allowed demonstrates why Allen shouldn’t have much trouble against this secondary.
  4. Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins – After a disappointing showing on Sunday, Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins offense now has a great opportunity to rebound in Week 5. Facing a Giants’ defense that has struggled to defend the pass and will blitz Miami heavily, Tagovailoa has a clear path towards a top-5 finish in the fantasy QB rankings.
  5. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles – THe fact that Jalen Hurts can maintain elite fantasy value even when the Eagles’ offense has red-zone issues speaks volumes about his ability. The Los Angeles Rams just allowed Anthon Richardson to score 3 total touchdowns with 200 pass yards and 56 rushing yards. Imagine what Hurt and the Eagles’ offense can do.
  6. Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts – Speaking of Anthony Richardson, he’ll be near the top of fantasy QB rankings all year. The passing stats and efficiency still aren’t ideal, but he’s a safe bet for 40-plus rushing yards and he’s scored four rushing touchdowns in three games this season.
  7. Daniel Jones, New York Giants – The New York Giants won’t be able to attack Miami through the air like Buffalo did, but Daniel Jones can still be a very productive fantasy quarterback. He’ll provide a safe floor thanks to his rushing totals and with Miami allowing over 250 passing yards per game, this matchup makes Jones a top-10 option.
  8. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions – When starting at home. Jared Goff has a 105.4 QB rating with a 73.5% completion rate and averages nearly 283 yards per game through the air. As for the matchup, the Carolina Panthers’ defense has been devastated by injuries, opening up a lot of space for Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta.
  9. Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars – In his last three starts, Trevor Lawrence is averaging just 6.3 yards per attempt with an 84.7 QB rating and three times as many sacks (six) as touchdowns (two). If Doug Pederson isn’t calling the plays, Lawrence can’t reach his potential as an elite quarterback. You almost have to start him in fantasy football, but temper expectations.
  10. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings – In a game with one of the highest projected point totals for Week 5, you can start Kirk Cousins with confidence. The turnovers remain a problem, but any quarterback who attempts 40-plus passes per game with Justin Jefferson, TJ Hockenson and Jordan Addison at his disposal is a must-start, especially with bye weeks.
  11. C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans – After looking timid in his NFL debut, C.J. Stroud is averaging 323.3 passing yards per game with a 109.9 QB rating and a 6-0 TD-INT ratio in the last three weeks. This matchup isn’t quite as favorable as last Sunday, but Atlanta has still allowed six passing touchdowns this season.
  12. Sam Howell, Washington Commanders – The Chicago Bears can’t rush the passer and Sam Howell’s biggest problem is his decision-making under duress. With Chicago’s defense not collapsing the pocket and allowing the second-most passing touchdowns (10) in the NFL, Howell is an outstanding play in Week 5.
  13. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals – Tee Higgins is likely out for Week 5 and the Cincinnati Bengals offense was statistically the worst in the NFL before he was injured. It’s also worth keeping in mind that Arizona has allowed just a 5-3 TD-INT ratio with 12 sacks recorded in four games. If you can find a good alternative to starting Burrow, you should do it.
  14. Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans – Ryan Tannehill is clearly at the point of his career where he’s a fringe fantasy option based on the matchup. Squaring off against a Colts’ defense that has allowed the fifth-most passing yards per game with a 68.7% completion rate, we like Tannehill as a low-risk option.
  15. Justin Fields, Chicago Bears – One monster performance is nice, but let’s remember it came against a defense that seems to be historically bad. Fields showed enough to move up a few spots in our fantasy QB rankings, but Washington can pressure opposing quarterbacks and Fields’ penchant for taking sacks could be catastrophic to his fantasy value on Thursday.
  16. Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers – Across his last 10 regular-season games, Brock Purdy has a 113.3 QB rating with an 18-3 TD-INT line and a 70% completion rate. The Dallas Cowboys will be able to pressure him and this is a difficult matchup, but the talent and system at least provide a path to fantasy relevance.
  17. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys – Even with bye weeks hitting, Dak Prescott is not a wise fantasy play in Week 5. San Francisco has recorded more interceptions (five) than touchdowns allowed (four) and with just 5.4 yards per pass attempt allowed, Prescott’s ceiling is low.
  18. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams – In a game that will likely require Matthew Stafford to throw a lot, we like the matchup against an Eagles’ secondary allowing 260.8 pass ypg with a 9-2 TD-INT line. Stafford will be even higher in the rankings if Cooper Kupp returns.
  19. Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers – Jordan Love doesn’t have the offensive line nor the consistency to be a weekly starter in fantasy football, but he’s a high-end QB2 option on Monday Night Football against a Raiders’ defense that has allowed 8 passing touchdowns with a 70.7% completion rate through four games.
  20. Jimmy Garoppolo, Las Vegas Raiders – We’re banking on Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers to carry Jimmy Garoppolo to fantasy relevance in Week 5. Even then, his value is limited to being a Superflex option or a fill-in starter in the deepest fantasy leagues.

Fantasy rankings based on 0.5 PPR scoring
  1. Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers – Christian McCaffrey is the best player in fantasy football with Sunday’s four-touchdown performance just further proving his value. Even against a top-5 defense, McCaffrey is atop the fantasy RB rankings.
  2. Bijan Robinson, Atlanta Falcons – For as frustrating as the Atlanta Falcons offense can be, Arthur Smith gets the football in Bijan Robinson’s hands. With solid run blocking, one of the NFL’s best running backs can go off for 100-plus yards any week.
  3. Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans – While the Indianapolis Colts have only allowed 3.8 yards per carry this season, it’s come with six touchdowns and 507 rushing yards allowed. Derrick Henry is Tennessee’s only path to winning and they need a win.
  4. Saquon Barkley, New York Giants – Ordinarily, a running back returning from a high-ankle sprain would be lower in our fantasy RB rankings. Bye weeks and injuries have taken a toll on the position, pushing Saquon Barkley to No. 4. Regarding the matchup, Miami is allowing 4.3 ypc and 123.5 rushing yards per game in 2023.
  5. Tony Pollard, Dallas Cowboys – This is not a good matchup for Tony Pollard, with San Francisco allowing just 3.9 yards per carry and 66 rush ypg. However, volume can be trusted and when paired with his explosive running along with his pass-catching prowess, Pollard at least has a path to be a solid producer against great defenses.
  6. Josh Jacobs, Las Vegas Raiders – While Josh Jacobs didn’t have a huge game on the ground, Las Vegas once again demonstrated he is a focal point of their offense. He won’t get as many receptions with Jimmy G back, but Green Bay has allowed 155.3 rush ypg through the first four weeks.
  7. Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts – Freshly signed to a new contract extension, Jonathan Taylor should immediately become the featured back with the Indianapolis Colts. While the Titans have one of the best run defenses in football, Taylor is a must-start.
  8. James Cook, Buffalo Bills – After a quiet Sunday on the ground (29 yards), James Cook stands a great chance of rebounding in Week 5. The Atlanta Falcons have a respectable defense, but they’re still allowing over 110 rushing yards per game.
  9. Travis Etienne, Jacksonville Jaguars – The backfield belongs to Travis Etienne, as demonstrated by his 39 touches and eight targets in the last two weeks. Considering Buffalo is allowing 6.3 yards per carry this year (118.5 rush ypg), Etienne’s volume makes him an easy top-10 option.
  10. Joe Mixon, Cincinnati Bengals – Assuming Cincinnati doesn’t get blown out again, Joe Mixon should receive 18-plus touches against the Arizona Cardinals. Facing a defense that allows 132 rush ypg with seven touchdowns, this could be one of the best weeks for Mixon in 2023.
  11. D’Andre Swift, Philadelphia Eagles – While D’Andre Swift isn’t quite the featured guy in Philadelphia, 17-plus touches will do the trick. He’s running behind the best offensive line in the NFL and there should be ample room to run versus Los Angeles.
  12. Aaron Jones, Green Bay Packers – Coming off 10 days of rest, Aaron Jones should resume his role as the workhorse of the Packers’ offense. Based on the state of the offensive line, Matt LaFleur will likely be even more inclined to feed Jones, especially against a defense surrendering 134 rush ypg and six rushing touchdowns.
  13. Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints – With Jamaal Williams sidelined, Alvin Kamara has the Saints’ backfield all to himself. We’ll likely never see a 13-reception game again, but 20-plus touches even from a lesser version of Kamara still puts him on the low-end RB1 radar against an injury-plagued Patriots’ defense.
  14. Kyren Williams, Los Angeles Rams – Kyren Williams is the only running back that Sean McVay wants on the field, as demonstrated by his 86 touches through four games. With that kind of workload, Williams will be an RB1 most weeks. However, we’d lower expectations for his fantasy ceiling against a great Eagles’ run defense.
  15. James Conner, Arizona Cardinals – Based on how Cincinnati and Arizona have played this year, the Cardinals should be favored. Close games mean 14-plus carries for James Conner and with a matchup against the Bengals’ run defense (157 rush ypg allowed, 5.1 ypc), Conner can be one of the best RB2s in Week 5.
  16. David Montgomery, Detroit Lions – Plenty of fantasy managers might not like how the Lions are using their running backs, but nothing is changing with a 3-1 record. Detroit trusts Montgomery more than Jahmyr Gibbs. Taking the field against a bottom-10 Panthers’ run defense (4.7 ypc, 136.3 rush ypg allowed), Montgomery is an excellent fantasy option.
  17. Isiah Pacheco, Kansas City Chiefs – Isiah Pacheco has received 41 touches (35 carries) in his last two games and is averaging 5 yards per carry. Minnesota (111.3 rush ypg) is respectable against the run, but committing so much attention to Patrick Mahomes should open things up for Pacheco.
  18. Breece Hall, New York Jets – If you could promise us Breece Hall would get 14-plus touches, he would be a top-12 option in Week 5. Even if he only receives 10-12 touches, we’ll bet on his big-play ability against a Broncos’ defense that has allowed 5.6 yards per carry and 176 rushing yards per game.
  19. Brian Robinson Jr, Washington Commanders – The game script dictates Brian Robinson’s fantasy value most weeks and Washington is a strong favorited on Thursday against the Chicago Bears. The game projects favorably for him and Chicago isn’t strong defensively.
  20. Raheem Mostert, Miami Dolphins – The days of Raheem Mostert being RB1 are over, but he should be much more involved in Week 5 than we saw this past Sunday. Splitting touches dings his value, but Mostert’s speed and presence in a high-scoring offense still give him RB2 value against a Giants’ defense that has allowed 4.2 ypc and six rushing touchdowns in three games.
  21. Alexander Mattison, Minnesota Vikings – The past two weeks have certainly been a lot better for Alexander Mattison, who received 37 combined carries over that span. The Kansas City Chiefs (4.4 ypc allowed) are vulnerable on the ground, so Mattison should provide RB2 value this weekend.

Week 5 fantasy rankings based on 0.5 PPR scoring
  1. Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins – After a less-than-stellar Week 4, we anticipate the Dolphins’ offense using Sunday’s matchup vs. New York as a get-right game. That puts Tyreek Hill in a position to feast on this Giants’ secondary.
  2. Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings – Justin Jefferson continues to play up to expectations, consistently finishing near the top of the weekly leaderboard for fantasy points among wide receivers. While Kansas City has a good secondary, Jefferson is simply better.
  3. Davante Adams, Green Bay Packers – It wouldn’t matter who was at quarterback for Las Vegas in Week 5, Davante Adams is a player to watch in a revenge game against the Green Bay Packers. Even if corner Jaire Alexander returns, Adams might set a season-high in targets on Monday Night Football.
  4. AJ Brown, Philadelphia Eagles – After a bumpy start to open the 2023 season, A.J. Brown is now back to producing at an elite level. While the young Rams’ secondary is better than expected, this is a prime opportunity for the Eagles’ offense to get things going.
  5. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions – After a bit of a quieter Week 4, Amon-Ra St. Brown now faces a Panthers’ secondary that has dealt with more injuries than just about any unit in the NFL. This is a fantastic opportunity for Brown to go over 100 yards with eight-plus catches.
  6. CeeDee Lamb, San Francisco Giants – We finally have a favorable game script that should allow CeeDee Lamb to be involved for all four quarters. San Francisco’s cornerbacks aren’t the strength of this defense, so Lamb should be peppered with quality targets in Week 5.
  7. Stefan Diggs, Buffalo Bills – Tyson Campbell has emerged as a high-end cornerback in the NFL and he should have plenty of successful reps vs. Stefan Diggs. Of course, this is one of the best route-runners in the NFL and that will still lead Diggs to top-10 fantasy value.
  8. Ja’Marr Chase, Cincinnati Bengals – If Tee Higgins wasn’t injured, Ja’Marr Chase is likely even lower in the fantasy WR rankings due to the target distribution. Now with Chase seeing more looks, assuming Higgins is out, that pushes up his floor. However, the wide receiver fantasy managers spent a top-5 pick on isn’t going to approach his ceiling based on the circumstances of the Bengals’ offense.
  9. Cooper Kupp, Los Angeles Rams – There’s still a chance that Cooper Kupp doesn’t immediately return to his normal target share in Week 1 and a snap count would slightly reduce his fantasy ceiling. With that said, the Stafford-Kupp connection is undeniable and it should be an early go-to for Los Angeles.
  10. DeVonta Smith, Philadelphia Eagles – The consolidation of targets in the Eagles’ offense is fantastic for DeVonta Smith moving forward. It significantly elevates his floor every week, making him a WR1 in PPR scoring. The bonus of it all, Smith’s higher floor doesn’t come at the expense of his ceiling being capped.
  11. Jaylen Waddle, Miami Dolphins – It’s become very clear that the Miami Dolphins don’t view this as a 1A/1B WR situation with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. However, Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa will likely want to get Waddle going after a slow start this season and a Giants’ defense with a high missed-tackle rate is the perfect time to funnel targets to Waddle.
  12. Brandon Aiyuk, San Francisco 49ers – While Deebo Samuel should be healthier in this matchup, Brandon Aiyuk is clearly Brock Purdy’s go-to guy in San Francisco. Aiyuk should have an edge over the Cowboys’ secondary and another strong performance would push him into WR1 territory moving forward.
  13. Chris Olave, New Orleans Saints – We’ll write off Chris Olave’s down week for now as the result of Derek Carr playing just days after suffering a shoulder injury. However, anything close to a repeat of what happened in Week 4, with Carr’s shoulder preventing him from throwing it 10-plus yards downfield more frequently, would diminish Olave’s fantasy value considerably.
  14. Terry McLaurin, Washington Commanders – The insistence of Eric Bieniemy and Sam Howell on spreading the football around to every single eligible pass-catcher on the Commanders’ roster is a problem. With that said, Chicago has one of the NFL’s worst secondaries and McLaurin is a top-10 wide receiver in the NFL in terms of talent.
  15. Calvin Ridley, Jacksonville Jaguars – The explosive first half in Week 1 feels like a distant memory. However, Calvin Ridley is still the obvious WR1 in Jacksonville and with Tre’Davious White lost for the season, the Bills’ secondary becomes a lot more inviting to opposing offenses.

Fantasy tight end rankings based on 0.5 points per reception
  1. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs – After a relatively disappointing line from Travis Kelce last week, he should rebound in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings. With both teams expected to combine for 50-plus, Kelce is a solid bet for 60-plus yards and a score.
  2. T.J. Hockenson, Detroit Lions – It’s rarely about matchups with T.J. Hockenson. While Week 4 was a bit of a letdown, we will always strongly recommend the tight end with 31 targets and 25 receptions in four games.
  3. Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens – Even if the Ravens’ receiving corps is healthier on Sunday, Mark Andrews remains the go-to guy for Lamar Jackson. Pittsburgh can’t cover but it can dial up pressures and quick penetration in the backfield should lead to more targets for Andrews.
  4. Sam LaPorta, Detroit Lions – Sam LaPorta is obviously not the typical rookie tight end. Even in a game where his targets dropped, he still delivered 56 receiving yards. We expect Hockenson to do even better against a depleted Panthers’ linebacker unit.
  5. George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers – George Kittle remains close to the top of fantasy TE rankings because of his reputation, but the stats matter. He has three games this season with 30 receiving yards or fewer. Of course, he could explode for 80 yards and two scores at any time. You just have to live with the risk of him giving you three points or 23.
  6. Darren Waller, New York Giants – The training camp buzz surrounding Darren Waller proved to be pure hype. However, the potential return of Saquon Barkley in Wee 5 could open up a little more space for Waller to turn five-plus targets into 40-plus receiving yards.
  7. Evan Engram, Jacksonville Jaguars – All we’re looking for here is safety. Evan Engram is averaging over 50 receiving yards per game and he has eight targets in three consecutive weeks. It doesn’t get much safer than that.
  8. Jake Ferguson, Dallas Cowboys – While Jake Ferguson hasn’t found the end zone yet, he is one of the best tight ends in fantasy right now. The Dallas Cowboys have fed him seven targets in three games this year and with over 110 receiving yards in the last two weeks, Ferguson’s arrow is pointing upward.
  9. Tyler Higbee, Los Angeles Rams – The potential return of Cooper Kupp would eat into Tyler Higbee’s target share, but bye weeks make things even more difficult at a thin position in fantasy. We’ve seen more than enough chemistry between Higbee and Stafford to at least have some confidence rolling the dice.
  10. Luke Musgrave, Green Bay Packers – A concussion wiped out Luke Musgrave’s chance at a big game in Week 4. Fortunately, he has 11 days to make it through the NFL’s concussion protocol. Because of his athleticism and size in this offense that needs playmakers, we’re still willing to gamble on Musgrave’s extremely high upside.
