The Washington Commanders came just one win away from appearing in the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1991 season. Now general manager Adam Peters has a busy offseason ahead as the Commanders do their best to narrow the competitive gap between them and the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Despite finishing with the fifth-best offense and ranking 18th in points allowed, the Commanders will have to consider roster upgrades on both sides of the ball. One potential solution has already emerged.

Washington Commanders could trade for cornerback Greg Newsome

One area where Dan Quinn’s defense struggled was at getting turnovers, with the Washington Commanders recording the NFL’s seventh-fewest interceptions last season. They only recorded seven interceptions as a team. Some players, like Detroit’s Kerby Joseph and Green Bay’s Xavier McKinney had more interceptions individually than the Commanders recorded as a team.
Nevertheless, the Commanders need some upgrades in the secondary, and there’s one former first-round pick who may be able to help.
Recently, The Athletic’s Zac Jackson suggested the Commanders could emerge as candidates to trade for Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II.
“Potentially separate from that, though, is that the Commanders’ cap space makes them a candidate to trade for Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II and allow Cleveland to open up about $13 million in 2025 cap space. Moving on from Newsome could create more money for the Browns to add pieces, potentially even a starting veteran quarterback for 2025.”

The 26th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, Newsome is still just 24 years old, and he already has 42 starts of NFL experience under his belt. However, he’s also set to enter the final year of his rookie contract, which means his salary jumps to $13.3 million in 2025. Since the Browns need cap relief, trading Newsome could help them accomplish their goals.
