Less than a year after the Washington Commanders traded the 42nd and 73rd picks in 2022, plus the 80th pick in 2023 for Carson Wentz, he is no longer a part of the team’s plans. That became official on Monday afternoon when the Commanders announced they had released Wentz from his contract.
The transaction clears $26.1 million from the team’s salary cap, giving them a lot more breathing room as they enter the offseason. They also announced defensive back Bobby McCain was let go as well. The Commanders now have over $30 million in cap space to spend, with plenty of holes to fill as they look to improve upon last season’s 8-8-1 season.

While Wentz didn’t enjoy any success during his lone season in Washington, and many would argue he didn’t have any success in his previous stop with Indianapolis either, some team will be willing to take a chance on the former No. 2 overall pick from the 2016 NFL Draft. Yet, will that be as a starter or someone coming in to push a QB who’s already on shaky ground?
Perhaps the biggest question is who will become the fourth team in as many years to hitch their cart to the 30-year-old QB?
As for Washington, they appear all-in on 2022 fifth-round pick Sam Howell, who new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy seems to be on board with as the team’s starter. Yet, the Commanders are likely to add at least a veteran as Howell’s backup, as he is currently the only QB on Washington’s roster. We’ll see what direction Washington turns to next, but it won’t be Wentz.
