NFL insider suggests Tom Brady could step away from FOX role to take over Las Vegas Raiders

Tom Brady spent multiple years trying to purchase a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders before the sale was finally improved in 2024. Now that he has a small ownership stake in the storied franchise, he could potentially be poised to take over the organization.

Brady and the NFL found themselves in an awkward situation during the season when his ownership stake was finalized. Serving in his first year as a broadcaster for FOX, set to provide commentary for Super Bowl LIX, Brady’s status as an owner has prevented him from the standard duties that broadcasters have.

The NFL currently prevents Brady from attending practices, stepping foot in other teams’ facilities, or participating in production meetings with players and coaches because he is a team owner. Even bigger changes could be made in 2025 amid reports the NFL might further limit what Brady can do, such as forbidding sit-down interviews with players.

It was particularly awkward for the league when Brady, who was heavily involved in the Raiders coaching search, served as FOX’s lead analyst for the Detroit Lions’ playoff game amid the NFL coaching carousel. Johnson ultimately took the Chicago Bears’ job while the Raiders hired Pete Carroll. It might also be the last time a situation like that happens.

Senior NFL writer Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports shared on Wednesday’s Inside Coverage podcast that Brady could eventually step away from his role as FOX’s lead NFL analyst to take over as the Raiders’ president.

“I asked one of Tom’s guys, whose known him for decades, ‘Is Tom going to take over the Raiders?’. He said yeah, just not soon. In a couple years, he’s going to take over the Raiders…My presumption would be that he’ll be team president, like a very involved team president.”

Robinson made it clear that if Brady took over as the Raiders’ team president, he would no longer serve as a broadcaster for FOX. He’s currently signed to a 10-year deal worth $375 million, making him the highest paid NFL broadcaster, with a career change likely costing him a significant portion of that money.

While the NFL would obviously sign off on Brady becoming a team president, his days as a broadcaster would be over. However, one of best NFL players of all time would get to follow in the footsteps of Michael Jordan as a team owner who oversees roster construction and coaching decisions. While the history of that doesn’t bode well for success, it is already something the Raiders want to try.
