The two-tournament stretch of the PGA Tour in Hawaii continues this week from last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions for the Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Last week, Jon Rahm overcame a seven-stroke deficit to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions as Collin Morikawa collapsed on the final nine holes.
This week, a compelling field of a full 144 players take the stage in Paradise, including the reigning champion from last year’s tournament, Hideki Matsuyama.

5 players who can raise the trophy on Sunday
Tom Kim
A week ago, Tom Kim made his Sentry Tournament of Champions debut and led the field in both strokes gained tee to green and par-5 scoring en route to his top five finish. That momentum will key for the 20-year-old, who already has a win this season.
The basic fundamentals of golf – hitting fairways and making putts – will be shown this week in Honolulu as that was the difference last week in Maui. If Kim can continue his play from a week ago, he will be in prime position to be at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.
Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth, who is the betting favorite, is making his first appearance at the Sony Open in four years. With Spieth, it is all about executing shots, knowing how much as he prepares each shot with his caddie. Shooting 19-under par will be provide momentum Spieth needs this week.
Brian Harman
Brian Harman has played consistently well over the last seven to eight months. Since his eighth-place finish at the Travelers Championship last June, Harman only has missed one cut and has one finish lower than 50th.
That includes a sixth-place finish at the The Open Championship, a third-place finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August and concluding the season at the Tour Championship with a 21st place finish. In the fall, Harman placed second at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and at the RSM Classic.
He also competed in last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions and shot 18-under par, good for 16th place. Harman, who is the second-best favorite behind Spieth, has the momentum as his alum just won the National Championship earlier this week.
Taylor Montgomery
Taylor Montgomery is playing in his first event of the new calendar year after playing seven events in the fall, which included just one finish worse than 20th.
The rookie has three top-10s this year, including a third-place finish at the Fortinet Championship in September. Montgomery made his last PGA Tour start at the RSM Classic where he shot all four rounds in the 60s, en route to a tied for 15th finish.
Sungjae Im
Sungjae Im is another player who competed last week at Kapalua and recorded 19-under par through his four rounds, highlighted by an 8-under 65 on Saturday.
Shooting 65 for a round this week, which would be 5-under on the par-70 course this week is going to be ideal and as long can Im can find that rhythm this week, he has the chance to be at or near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.
