Seattle Seahawks ‘working through’ decision to move on from former All-Pro

Mike Macdonald’s first season as an NFL head coach went fairly well, with the Seattle Seahawks finishing with a 10-7 record. Yet, it still wasn’t enough for the Seahawks to reach the playoffs.

Now Seahawks general manager John Schneider has to find a way not to make too many drastic changes while taking steps toward improving the roster. As a result, we could see the Seahawks try some addition by subtraction this offseason.

Seattle Seahawks could move on from Tyler Lockett

Tyler Lockett is the Seattle Seahawks’ longest-tenured receiver. The 2015 third-round pick has played 10 seasons in the NFL, and all of them have been with the Seahawks.

After reaching first-team All-Pro honors in addition to a Pro Bowl bid as a rookie, Lockett hasn’t earned either accolade since. However, he has recorded four 1000-yard seasons.

Yet, now he has a $30.8 million cap hit in 2025, which drastically outweighs his production after recording 600 yards and two touchdowns last season.

However, as coach Mike Macdonald recently admitted, the Seahawks are “working through” whether Lockett will be on the roster next season.

The Seahawks would see $17 million in cap savings by releasing Lockett, but that would incur a $13.8 million dead cap charge in 2025 too. Those numbers could flip around if the Seahawks designate Lockett as a post-June 1 cap casualty.

Knowing how much money they’d be tossing away just by cutting him, the Seahawks will likely try to shop the veteran receiver on the trade market this offseason, and they may have to pay some of his salary to get a decent return.
