Seattle Seahawks ‘keenly interested’ in signing All-Pro defender this offseason

The Seattle Seahawks exceeded expectations this past season, reaching the playoffs with one of the best offenses in the NFL. As the franchise looks to take a step forward in 2023, upgrading the defense is a priority.

Seattle is determined to re-sign quarterback Geno Smith, the reigning NFL Comeback Player of the Year who outplayed Denver Broncos star Russell Wilson. Whether Seattle uses the franchise tag on Smith or signs him to a multi-year extension, it is well-positioned to spend on some of the top NFL free agents this spring.

Defensively, the Seahawks secondary is a strength heading into next season. Rookie cornerbacks Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant exceeded expectations in 2022. Meanwhile, Jamal Adams will return and Quandre Diggs is under contract. However, the front seven is a real weakness.

According to Gregg Bell of The News Tribune, the Seahawks are ‘keenly interested’ in a reunion with All-Pro linebacker Wagner following his release by the Rams.

  • Bobby Wagner stats (2022): 140 total tackles, 10 QB hits, 10 tackles for loss, six sacks

Wagner was released by the Seahawks last offseason, later signing with the Rams. In his age-32 season, he was one of the best off-ball linebackers in the NFL and earned All-Pro honors for the ninth time in his career.

A native of California, Wagner immediately generated interest from NFL teams after the Rams mutually agreed to part ways with him. Following a disappointing 2022 season in Los Angeles, he is eyeing a playoff contender to suit up for this fall.

“We can’t talk about that. But I love Bobby, he’s meant the world to us and our program and he played particularly well against us. So you know, we’ll see what happens. But right now, I can’t really talk about that.”

Signing Wagner would fill an immediate void in the Seahawks’ defense and provide the front office with more flexibility in the 2023 NFL Draft. Seattle could use its first-round picks on two edge rushers or potentially draft a pass rusher and a quarterback.

While there will be competition to sign Wagner, the familiarity he has with the Seahawks’ organization and the opportunity to stay in the NFC West could prove appealing.
