A new report from a top NBA insider claims the San Antonio Spurs will be in the chase for every notable point guard that will be available in NBA free agency and on the trade market this summer.

While the San Antonio Spurs finished with one of the worst records in the league this season, the final month of the year gave reason for hope. They scored surprise wins over the Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans, New York Knicks, and Phoenix Suns. But more than anything, Victor Wembanyama confirmed he is a future superstar.

The French Phenom led the team in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks and is still only scratching the surface of his potential at just 20 years old. After a quiet offseason last year, if the Spurs want to be a playoff team in 2024-25 they must improve a roster that let Wembanyama down for much of the season. And it seems point guard will be a top priority in the summer.

On a Tuesday edition of the “Pat McAfee Show,” NBA insider Shams Charania claimed that he expects the San Antonio Spurs to “be in play, they’re going to be rumored, they’re going to be talked about with legitimately every top-flight point guard that we’re going to see potentially on the marketplace.”

With some serious impact players expected to be available in free agency and on the trade market this summer, let’s look at five star point guards the Spurs are likely to target.

Trae Young

There have been rumors for the last year that the Atlanta Hawks could put Trae Young on the trade block. However, in recent weeks the momentum seems as strong as ever that the three-time All-Star could be on the move and the Spurs have already been linked to a potential deal. A pairing of Wembanyama and Young could be dynamite in the West and give them two building blocks for a real title contender in the next three years.

Chris Paul

There have been some recent rumors about future Hall-of-Famer Chris Paul being a possible target for the Spurs this summer. If the organization strikes out in pursuits for younger stars, Paul would be a sensible fallback option who would come at a reasonable rate and be a very good mentor for the franchise’s burgeoning superstar.

Donovan Mitchell

With Donovan Mitchell unlikely to sign an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, trading him is a strong possibility in the coming months. The New York Knicks have been linked to Mitchell in recent rumors, however, the San Antonio Spurs also have some solid chips to offer in a potential trade. Including Devin Vassell, and the team has three first-round picks in 2024 and 2025.

D’Angelo Russell

Recent reports suggest D’Angelo Russell will opt out of his current deal with the Los Angeles Lakers and test his value in free agency. The former first-round picks gets a lot of hate but he has been a consistent 18 points and six assists player or better for years. A backcourt with him and Vassell could be formidable, and he would be a nice piece to add around Wembanyama.

Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook is not the player he once was, but even at 35, he can still make an impact. If he leaves the Los Angeles Clippers after this season, the Spurs can offer a starting job and a prominent role with a team on the rise. Furthermore, they have a boatload of cap space and can offer one final contract for big money over a couple of seasons.
