Former No. 2 overall draft pick Robert Griffin III had his NFL career derailed primarily by injuries, and in a possible concession that his playing days are finished, he’s signed on with ESPN to pursue broadcasting.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news of Griffin joining the four-letter network, indicating that the 31-year-old signal-caller hasn’t completely given up on signing on with an NFL team as training camps continue:

Griffin has always had plenty of swagger and charisma, and he absolutely electrified the NFL in his Rookie of the Year campaign with the Washington Football Team in 2012. However, a fateful knee injury knocked him off course, as Washington turned to Kirk Cousins under center, and Griffin was never the same.

RG3 has spent the past several years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens as Lamar Jackson‘s backup.

With plenty of firsthand experience of the ups and downs in the NFL and a ton of experience accumulated over a near decade-long pro football career, Griffin would likely do well as a broadcaster. It’ll be interesting to see how ESPN utilizes his on-air talents and how quickly he climbs the ranks.

But then again, there’s always the chance that Griffin could return for one more season as a backup somewhere. As we’ve seen with the Indianapolis Colts and Carson Wentz set to undergo foot surgery, it doesn’t take much to throw an entire team into disarray with one hard-luck training camp injury.
