It’s pretty clear that San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman will not be back with the team for a fourth season. Sherman’s recent comments about the 49ers’ cap situation adds another layer to this.
Could the Las Vegas Raiders potentially come calling when NFL free agency opens up? Raiders head coach Jon Gruden was caught on a hit mic during a Super Bowl week interview with Sherman, telling the future Hall of Fame cornerback “If you’re available and interested, maybe you and I can get together at some point off-air.”
In response to that, it appears that Sherman has legitimate interest in heading from Northern California to the desert metropolis.

“All of this sports is just a big freakin’ reality TV show, as you know,” Sherman said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “But I think there’s legitimate interest. They have a good team. It’s going to be a conversation. There will be a conversation with a few teams and I’ll make the decision that’s best for me and my family, and off we go.”
In reality, Sherman to the Raiders would make a whole lot of sense. He played under new Las Vegas defensive coordinator Gus Bradley when the two were with the Seattle Seahawks. Las Vegas could also use a veteran presence in the secondary with youngsters Trayvon Mullen and Damon Arnette starting.

Sherman, 32, is coming off an injury-plagued 2020 season with the 49ers that saw him suit up in just five games. He recorded 18 tackles and an interception. That came after a stellar Pro Bowl performance for San Francisco during their run to the Super Bowl in 2019.
A bit long in the tooth, Richard Sherman would likely come on a short-term deal. It makes perfect sense in that the Las Vegas Raiders yielded a whopping 30 points per game a season ago. It would also enable 2020 first-round pick Damon Arnette to move to the slot with Sherman starting opposite Mullen.
