Pittsburgh Steelers training camp storylines

Kenny Pickett’s time to shine

Not everyone was sold on Pittsburgh using a first-round pick on quarterback Kenny Pickette, especially when he couldn’t beat out Mitch Trubisky for the starting job. However, the 20th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft eventually won over control, impressed his teammates and really looked sharp as he became more familiar with the offense.

“[Pickett] is just as smart. So, the arm might not be like Ben, but he got the heart. He’s a good football player. He’s never going to give up. He is always going to try to be the best at throwing or reading. Whatever it is, he will work his -expletive- off to be the best at it.”

Trubisky protected the football late in the year, throwing just one interception in his final six games. While his completion rate remained under 60 percent, the organization saw more than enough flashes to believe in him moving forward.

Entering his second NFL season, Pickett is now going to be asked to be a leader and he’ll need to put more of the offensive weight on his shoulders. With an improved offensive line, he’ll have more time in the pocket to display his decision-making and poise. There’s been a lot of buzz this spring, with training camp providing fans an opportunity to now see the improvements up close.

Keeping a watchful eye on Jaylen Warren

Najee Harris will be the Steelers’ running back in 2023, but Jaylen Warren could play a far more prominent role than some are expecting. Harris ranked 59th in true yards per carry (3.7), 51st in breakaway run rate (2.6%), 45th in yards created per touch (2.13) and had a 61.9 PFF receiving grade last season. Warren ranked 12th in true yards per carry (4.7), fifth in yards created per touch (3.82) and finished with a 79.8 receiving grade.

Mark Kaboly of The Athletic highlighted Warren as one of the standouts from OTAs and minicamp this spring, noting his belief that this isn’t a player Pittsburgh can keep off the field. While the Steelers might not use him as often on rushing downs, Warren could carve out a prominent role on third downs and be a far more prominent offensive weapon than anticipated by fans. Keep a close eye, he’ll likely be one of the training camp stars.

Health can make all the difference for the Pittsburgh Steelers defense

This is a completely different defense when everyone is healthy. Last year, Pittsburgh struggled to get by with T.J. Watt sidelined for seven games, Minkah Fitzpatrick missing two contests and other ailments making this a banged-up defense. Everyone is healthy heading into training camp and that can be transformational for this unit. Watt remains one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and his presence makes life even easier for Alex Highsmith. With Damontae Kazee, also back out there, Steelers fans will witness a much better defense at training camp and this fall.

Pittsburgh’s new additions under the spotlight

While the Steelers didn’t have an abundance of draft picks or cap space this offseason, they made smart moves. Patrick Peterson is the perfect veteran cornerback to fill the void in the secondary and he’s an ideal mentor for second-round pick Joey Porter Jr, giving the Steelers a cornerback tandem they can trust.

Pittsburgh also added linebacker Cole Holcomb and Nick Herbig, another testament to the front office’s interest in pairing reliable veterans with young, high-upside players. Throw in Keeanu Benton on the defensive line, left guard Isaac Seumalo and tight end Darnell Washington, you’ve got a deep roster with the perfect mix of steady veterans and intriguing breakout candidates.
