Philadelphia Eagles sign Saquon Barkley: Examining the impact

The Philadelphia Eagles have had added one of the top NFL free agents on the market, signing star running back Saquon Barkley from the division-rival New York Giants.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Barkley has agreed to a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Eagles. It makes him one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL.

This comes a short while after the Chicago Bears signed D’Andre Swift away from the Eagles as free agency opened up on Monday.

Philadelphia was seen as one of the favorites to land the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year with the division-rival Dallas Cowboys also being considered a potential landing spot. It’s in this that the Eagles not only steal one of the better backs in the game, but they are also able to add him to an offense with the likes of Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown.

The No. 2 overall pick back in 2018, Barkley is seen as one of the most dynamic running backs in the game. Throughout his six-year career with the Giants, the Penn State product averaged north of 1,200 total yards and eight touchdowns per game.

He’s also seen as a dual threat back out of the backfield. The 27-year-old ball carrier is averaging a solid 48 receptions per season.

That’s going to go a long way in helping Hurts and the Eagles’ passing attack after some major struggles down the stretch a season ago.

Remember, Philadelphia start the 2023 season with a 10-1 record. The team then lost five of its final six before being blown out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs.
