The Washington Capitals had to make a quick roster move after Charlie Lindgren went down with an upper-body injury. In response, the team signed retired goaltender Parker Milner to back up Logan Thompson for Friday’s road game against the Anaheim Ducks.
Milner, 35, had never played in the NHL and was on the Capitals’ road trip serving as an extra goalie at practice. While he doesn’t have a professional title with the team, he regularly skates as a practice goaltender.
The Capitals gave Milner the No. 1 to wear in his NHL debut, as he even got to take a rookie lap at the age of 35.
Milner played collegiate hockey at Boston College, where he led the Eagles to the 2012 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and Division I national championship. As a pro, he played previous seasons with the AHL’s Hershey Bears and ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays.
Milner’s last season was in 2019-20 with Hershey and South Carolina, where he was in a goalie tandem with, you guessed it, Thompson.
However, Milner is not only associated with hockey, he loves food as well. Since retiring, the 35-year-old has worked as a food critic and serves as the food editor for the Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina.
