Jacob Fowler once again instilled an impressive level of confidence throughout the lineup, helping the Habs turn the tables on the Boston Bruins, and earning a well-deserved 6-2 win. Fowler now has a .918 save percentage, which is incredible when we consider his lack of professional experience. Beyond Fowler, the Habs received important contributions from their best players, which is always a good recipe for a win. [Canadiens Highlights: Fights And Goals Galore]

We’re used to Lane Hutson providing dominant efforts for the Habs, but he’s somehow managed to find a new gear in December. Statistically speaking, Thursday night’s game versus the Bruins wasn’t just a great showing by Hutson, it was the best game of the year from any Habs player. Interestingly, Hutson has registered the highest game score of any player this season, and he also holds the second, third, and fourth spot on the list.

Here’s what the game scores looked like for the entire team. Sometimes, the eye test and the numbers don’t line up, but on Thursday night they definitely did when it comes to Hutson’s play.

Aatos Koivu served as Finland’s second-line right wing as they took on Team USA in a World Juniors Championship pre-tournament game. The Americans won 3-1, but it should be noted that Koivu assisted on Finland’s only goal of the game.

The preceding game was not suitable for all audiences. As the Toronto Maple Leafs moved the Tuesday start time to 4 p.m. against the Pittsburgh Penguins to hold a Next Gen kids’ game, many of the mistakes should have been witnessed by impressionable children who might themselves play hockey. Jacob Markstrom wasn’t just the best player for the New Jersey Devils (20-16-1) on Tuesday night, but he was the best player on the ice for both teams. He flashed leather, made significant pad saves, and fought his way through traffic. He was downright terrific, and showed the Devils brass the goaltender they hoped for when they signed him to a new two-year extension. Until he didn’t. [New Jersey Devils]

There have been a lot of factors behind the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ dreadful season thus far. One of the most putrid facets of the team has been its NHL-worst power play. And with that, the Leafs have made their first major move to try to change their fortunes by firing assistant coach Marc Savard. The power play was his responsibility. [Toronto Maple Leafs]
