With Frank Gore likely being the first chip to fall at the running back position, lesser options will start to flood the free agent market.

It now appears that the New York Giants will sign former New England Patriots running back Shane Vereen.

This is a tremendous fit for both sides. Vereen can act as a pass-catching complement to veteran Rashad Jennings and second-year running back Andre Williams. With 99 receptions over the past two seasons, Vereen will provide Eli Manning a great safety vale on third-down situations and obvious passing downs.

However, the former second-round pick from Cal has recorded just 217 rush attempts for less than 1,000 yards in four NFL seasons. He’s not going to be an every-down back in the Giants scheme. And that’s not what they are expecting of him.
