New York Yankees call up top prospect for the stretch run

The New York Yankees are reportedly calling up top prospect Everson Pereira to make his Major League Baseball debut for Tuesday’s series opener against the Washington Nationals.

Jack Curry of YES also reported that former top prospect Oswald Peraza has been re-called from Triple-A and will be in uniform on Tuesday.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Embattled Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted over the weekend that some top prospects could get called up from the minors with New York pretty much out of the American League Playoff race.

“Obviously, guys from down below are pushing to get involved. Considerations. Those kinds of things. Just talking everything about our team. I think it’s possible [top prospects are promoted. We’ll probably talk some more about it [Sunday]. So I think anything’s on the table right now.”

Boone’s comments came as his Yankees were being swept by the hated Boston Red Sox. At 60-64 on the season, New York finds itself in last place in the East. The team is also nine games out of the final wild card spot in the American League.

Pereira, 22, entered the season as New York’s No. 3-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. He’s put up some darn good numbers in Double-A and Triple-A thus far on the season.

Everson Pereira stats (2023): .300 average, 18 HR, 64 RBI, 11 SB, .921 OPS

At the time of the call, the Venezuela native was hitting .312 with eight homers, 33 RBI and a .937 OPS at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He should be a regular moving forward in the Yankees’ outfield.

As for Oswald Peraza, he was the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect heading into last season. The infielder has struggled in limited playing time for the Yankees, including hitting .173 with six RBI in 52 at-bats earlier this season.
